private plate transfers/retention

  57 Ibiza Formula Sport
things are just getting worse! firstly i find out i probably cant pick my car up until the weekend before FCS due to stupid building society long transfer times, and now i've just rang DVLA and they've said I can't give my ka in as part exchange as planned for 4 weeks til the retention certificate has come through. the salesman at the garage is going to go mental and will most probably sell my 182 in the meantime...great news.

does it actually take 4 weeks for the retention certificate to come through?!
i wanted to do a straight transfer of my plate to the 182 but the garage i'm buying the 182 off said they aren't prepared to do the paperwork or something! wouldn't that have been quicker/easier?!

thanks for any help
:(

Right...

Building Society, just take the cash out and hand it to him.

You want the plate off, so you'll need the form. Do you have one of those? (I think its E111 or something like that) Put it on retention and then put it on the 182 once youve got it. You'll just need to wait for the V5 to come back from the DVLA which shouldnt take that long but I did hear they are having a long wait atm!!

building society - aint as easy as that. takes 6 days to clear the cheque which was put in on saturday = next tues but i cant get off work so it'll have to be the weekend after for pickup (before i had the dvla problem)

Get your docs, go to your local dvla office, and they will put the original plate back on it straightaway and give you a new tax disc. Your personal plate will go on retention ( you cannot shift it straight onto the new car, it has to go via retention cert )They will also provide you with a copy of your v5 stamped to say it going back to DVLA. Then you can immediately sell your car to the dealer, as when he sells it, he will either have the new v5 in hand, or he applies for a new one in the new owners name.

After all that, when you have your new car, your new retention certificate will come through, then it is back down to the DVLA office to swap it that day!

Does that help? Either way, it should not slow the deal. In future, when you are approaching a sale, I find it easier to take the plate off the car a few weeks earlier to save this grief.

Some local offices have stopped doing the over the counter now so worth a phone call first.

Hi There, im in process of selling my car, just went to the DVLA yesterday to get the plates taken off my car. They said it TAKES A WEEK (they have changed, they no longer do it on the same day) to send me the documents stating I can put my old plates back on the car. But if I collect from the DVLA office should be by Friday. Then it takes another week for the new log book to come back.

Hope this helps, it may not though.

  Black/Gold 182!
You need a V778 form which you fill out, they take your V5 document off you and MOT certificate and issue new ones in the post. These are also downloadable off the net.

Good to know this, thanks. I have'nt changed mine for over 2 years, have to factor that in!

Yep, it has delayed me buying my new car and selling this one, but if you collect from the DVLA office it is quicker. Plus with the postal strike Friday it saves postage.

I have the form (somewhere) Anni if you need one ASAP but believe me I delayed my sale by almost a month waiting for the p1ssing DVLA!

Alternatively can you not come to an agreement with the garage that they take your car, then you'll initiate the retention process on the basis that they'll make the documents available as you need them.

  Black/Gold 182!
I know what you mean.

Good job im only working part time at the moment and have days off.

If you want to transfer the Reg then you need both log books but will take the same amount of time (7 to 14 working days). But will save you paying the £105 retnetion fee aswell as the £80 transfer fee. So see if you can get the log book. :)

if you put it on retention it's £120 which includes the subsequent £80 transfer fee so nothing more to pay. The direct transfer is £80 all in.

I paid £105 for retention mate.

I hope you told him that he would have to wait longer if that was the case.

Agreed ^^ He is being a lazy fecker there, he could do it with barely any grief. The dealer I bought mine from had just taken a personal plate of mine prior to my purchase.

  57 Ibiza Formula Sport
well the sales guy who i originally said id buy it off last week seemed fine about the plate thing but the manager said "oh its too much hassle-we leave it up to the owner to sort that out" knob! i dunno what im gonna do, i cant see him wanting to keep the 182 for me for a month?!

  Black/Gold 182!
If youve found one like you have youl find another around.

But i would be pissed off with him being laid back. Do your best, thats what I say. Im in the same position as you really.

Strange that, I'm sure I paid £120 back in Feb and then paid nothing more to put it on my new car :S

Oh and cheers Anni, I hadn't even realised! lol!

yeah prob was mate, think I am! But I didn't pay anything to put it on my new car, lol!

int that the travel insurance form :rasp:

lol, I know id heard that somewhere!

tbh Anni id tell him to sort the plate or get fucked. He should be trying to help you to make a sale not to make things more awkward. You'll find another one if he does sell it.

Have you paid a deposit?

  57 Ibiza Formula Sport
yeah dan, i paid a deposit on saturday but he was arsey then saying "do you want the car or not?!" all because i said i felt a bit disappointed that it was driving to the left!
grr this whole 182 buying experience is the most stressful thing ever, really driving me and the bf insane!

I got messed around by a company who wouldn't let me test drive a RB without paying the deposit first! I simply walked away and found one at a more accommodating garage!

I went to test drive a 182 the other week id seen the other side of Cannock. Drove for about an hour and half to get there in traffic. Got there and the dealer said that 'We dont do test drives!' You have to put a deposit down first.

Yeah it's a joke mate, why would you put a deposit down on a car that you hadn't even driven!? :S

  Black/Gold 182!
Yep, a non refundable deposit. Bludy joke! How are you meant to sell a car by doing that.

When i traded the 172 in, the dealer did all the paperwork for me.

the documents took a week to come through, and the salesman even went to the DVLA office (24 miles) on his lunch break to collect the documents to speed up the process.

He made it so easy for me. I just gave him everything i had, and he returned everything i needed for the new car. Log book, tax etc. and made me up a set of new plates.

Really helpful guy, a pleasure to deal with :)

Anni, i would seriously tell the manager to stick the racing blue up his chocolate brown after treating you like that. Was it a renault main dealer? my experience was with a franchised dealer down south.

  57 Ibiza Formula Sport
that sounds really good fubar, it's not a renaul dealer it's just a family run car sales garage in bradford, the 182 is the most expensive/best car they have for sale lol.

gonna get my bf to ring the guy today and say we need him to transfer the plate otherwise it's gonna take 4 weeks before he can have my ka as i cant get to the local office to speed things up due to working and the distance!

I paid £105 for retention mate.

Then you have to pay £80 to put it back on.

The £105 includes the £80 which is the transfer fee. No need to pay £105 and then £80.

Having put your plate on retention you have 12 months to assign it to a vehicle. Otherwise, you pay £25 to keep it on retention for another 12 months.

Anni... I have changed my car 5 or 6 times now and on have been in the situation you are in at the moment before. Have a talk with the garage you are buying the 182 from and explain the situation. From my experience you can do one of two things - ask the garage to take in the Ka without the full logbook (you retain a green owners slip when the DVLA to the paperwork to put your plate on retention). This proves the car is still yours.

Garages I have dealt with previously have been happy to take this in place of the full logbook - then when you get the logbook back you can pass it onto the garage.

Alternatively, the garage will just need to hold the car for you - i'm guessing you have already paid a deposit so they'd need to be a real arse to sell the car from underneath you.

Have a chat with the garage and see what they are prepared to do - use some feminine charm and i'm sure they'll go for option A above.

Oh and i'd also take half a day holiday to get the ball moving on getting the plate onto retention as well :)

If i'd have known how much hassle it was changing plates between cars, i never would have bothered with my private plate!!
I was in a slightly diff situation, bought my 182 and still had my old car with p/plate on. Went to DVLA local office who robbed me of £80 transfer fee and demanded to inspect my old car before doing the transfer (which i had cancelled insurance on and was out of MOT), they also told me i could not MOT my old car until the new v5 for it came through - which it did about three weeks later! Grrr!
Having said that, they did issue me with new tax discs after 3 days so i could put the plate on the 182, just not MOT and sell my old one.

Go to fulwood they do it over the counter. I have been a few times. As said they re issuse your ka with a reg. Ask them for the original number plate. This saves time and money.
