PROBLEM - Cracked Sump

Saturday night driving a friend home on his dirty, sh*tty full of pot hole, cracks, sharp rocks - you name it its on this bloody road and made a crack in the sump - half the size of a five pence peice. All the oil drained out, she started to overheat so I left her there.

To cut a long story short, filled in the hole with some underwater quick bonding putty that my friend said should hold to get me home, which it did. What I want to know is can the sump be welded as I know a freind that can do this (specialises in allumin welding), I think £220 for a sump is excessive.

Also the Haynes says that you have to lift the engine out to get the sump off - but is there an other way of getting the bugger off.

And to top it all off a good friend of mine took me to drive his newly purchased Williams 3 yesterday - which is hot!

Thanks

Costa

NB Dont want to be a pain but does anyone have one or know where i can get one second hand?

Yes a sump can be welded just make sure you get rid of all the oil from it first. Welding sumps is common place in kit car building to ensure you get better ground clearance.

It can be solved for £20 with some alu epoxy paste..i fixed mine with it... sets hard as hell...and will not leak at all...its designed for sump repairs etc...used in WRC etc... you need to driain remaning oil out, clean the sump thouroughly and apply the stuff.....hope this helps..i will get the actuall brna name for you...if needs be.

also i have a sump if you need one .... get a sump guard welded on if you decide to go down that route....i did the same thing as you,,... youll need to re prime your tappets etc if you have been running low on oil..

i just hope its not too late for you, if you carried on driving after loosing oil you may have damaged your engine already. Sorry to be the one to tell you.

Cheers for the replies.

Well stopped driving her after 3 mins as the oil light came on and her tempreture shot up, checked underneath and saw the oil leaking (didnt even start her up to move her to the side of the road, pushed her.

gunnergibson - how long ago did you put the stuff you recommeded on your sump ? This would save me having to remove the sump. What about the spare sump where are you and how much?

Rockport - after filling the hole and putting about 5 litres of oil in her, I started her up, could here a loud tapping/ticking for about 5 min, then the sound went and she sounded as she normally does - maybe because she spent the whole bleeding to death and was bone dry.

What do you guys reckon - replacement sump, weld the hole, put the epoxy gunnergibson used ?

Cheers once again

Costa

spare sump is in LS28 (in between leeds and bradford)£ 40.

i have had the Alu paste on for 3 weeks...no problems at all!..they sell it up my way for £18 for 2 tubs...one being the activator.. it is made by a specialist chem company .

hope this helps.
