Problems caused by blowing exhaust?

  Audi TT 3.2 V6
Hi guys,

Just been out to change the rear mounts on my exhaust. While doing them i noticed that around a joint in the exhaust were the centre pipe has been replaced it was very black.

Started the car up and sure enough i could feel the exhaust blowing through it (not very noisy but can feel the exhaust emisions creeping out of it)

Ill get it repaired tommorow, i was just wondering if this can cause much loss of performance as ive noticed lately the car hasnt felt quite as eager, although ive no idea how long its been blowing for.

Thanks, Russ

I think I read on here a few times that leaking exhausts on 1*2's can have quite a big impact on performance. I know before I got my powerflow stealth mine was leaking and it felt s**t!

Yep Exhausts are tuned with their lengths and various other bits, leaks in them can certainly cause a loss of power.

what about fuel economy, if it is blowing?

Normally goes down. Well it did on my 182.

I had a very slight (and i mean slight) blow on the cat->centre section joint.

Was fine driving normally, but any revs after 4k (Hard accel) it sounded horrible!!

Lost around 4-5mpg

Once i sealed her up properly.....gained the MPG back and also the lost power was back. It was very dull with the leak, quick but just not exciting lol

The joint is a pig!
God knows why they didnt just use a bolted flange there.

mine blowing very slight at the cat joint and noticed mpg was lower so will have to get it sealed pronto! Cheers

Yup my mpg has dropped from 32ish down to 27/28 so them figures sound about bang on has.

Can also hear the think rattle like mad when the cars first started, once the exhausts warmed up a bit (metal expande) it seems to clear its self up. This could explain the hesitation ive been having just before 3000rpm within the first min or so of driving from cold.
