problems with wireless network - ntl broadband

Hi guys, if anyone can help me it'l be greatly appreciated.

At the moment my ntl broadband comes through a cable modem into my household pc. Ive purchased a linksys router and network card, and cant seem to pick up an internet connection on my laptop.

The internet comes to my household computer via USB, however i want the internet to go through the router to provide the internet to the household computer (using cables) and my laptop wirelessly.

Ive linked the 'internet' socket up to the ethernet slot at the back of my cable modem, and ive put a cable from the network port at the back of my pc to LAN 1 at the back of the router. The internet light and the LAN 1 light on the router are flashing, however i can only get the internet on my household PC, which im guessing is still coming in through the USB as when i disconnect the USB it looses it.

Any ideas?

Thanks

If you have a USB modem you have to options..

1, Ditch the USB modem and get an Ethernet one, so you can connect it to the router correctly.
2, Ditch the USB modem and get a Router/Modem (router with modem built in)

you can't use usb and ethernet on your ntl modem at the same time.

then you need to make sure you got a cable router (not adsl)

I think there is a way to network the PC and Laptop so the Laptop can share the PC's Internet connection, bt if you want to go on the Internet on the Laptop the PC will need to be turned on and connected. So go with on of the above^^

I'm not an expert so if anyone else has any ideas or can expand on what I've said...

i have a Linksys WRT54G router. Does this have a modem in it?

Should i uninstall the internet and reinstall it using the 'ethernet' option rather than USB? I'm just afraid im going to uninstall my usb connection and not get it going again.

Im a bit of a computer novice unfortunately.

you need something like this

uninstall usb drivers for modem

plug the ethernet cable into this from modem then

reinstall ethernet drives

Does your modem have Ethernet? If so unplug the USB, Connect the modem to the router Via Ethernet. Turn off pc and laptop, restart router then turn pc and laptop back on. Connect to your wireless network with the laptop then see if you can get the internet.

Now, with the Pc having no connection you'll need to connect it to the router Via Ethernet or make you PC wireless with a USB dongle (about £20)

There is nothing wrong with the router you have. The modem must be supplied by NTL, so you don't get these built into routers for cable connections. You can get them if you have ADSL.

Remove the USB and connect the modem to the router WAN port via ethernet. With the router powered on, reboot/powercycle the modem (important). Once the modem is indicating it has locked it's signals, you may want to then reboot the router to ensure it obtains it's DHCP info. I would then connect one of your PCs via a network cable to one of the switch ports. Reboot the PC. Check your connection is working and then configure the wireless from there. Hope that helps

You probably need to clone your network cards mac onto the router.

start > run type cmd then press enter. type ipconfig /all to find out the mac address. then just go into your router setup and whack it in!
