Purpose of a Splitter?

What is the purpose of a splitter on say a 1.2 other than just for looks?

styling gimmick. any aerodynamic advantage is going to be minimal on a shopping trolley IMO (that's not a 1.2 comment - thinking of small cars, generally)

the 1.2's are like 40mm higher then sport versions of the same car. (just imo) They are there for styling purposes as without one it would look like a monster truck with baby wheels.
