The gearbox in mine is on the way out, or at least the syncro's are... I was wondering if anyone would recommend a straight oem replacement or another one - i do the occasional track work with the car and it's my weekend toy so does get used.... Any suggestions?

  Whichever has fuel
If you plan on keeping the car, i'd get it rebuilt by a good reputable place.

If you fit a secondhand one there's only so long that will last.

Get another one from a breakers or the for sale section, £150-£250 depending on mileage.
Then send your knackered one to Agency Transmissions for a full refurb,
he'll take it apart and tell you what it'll cost before he does anything.

If he can't sort it, or reckons it's too knackered he won't charge you,
I got some good advice from him when mine shat itself,
although mine totally shredded itself so it never made it to him, as it was only good as a door stop.

A full refurb from him is about the same as a second hand box with a warranty from Renparts.

Unless you've got a second car you can use while you send your one away for a refurb?

The JC5 130 I got from a breakers is smooth as silk,
it's a good stop gap while you save for a refurb, cost me £275 but it's 20k miles newer than my car.

If it makes you feel better I don't have the money for a second box and refurb,
so i'm just gambling that mine will last a few years while I try and improve my life financially.

I've a second car so i have the option of not needing a second box - i'll have mine removed and if the reno specialists see it needing a refurb i'll ask agency for a competitive quote... cheers for you help. was thinking of going down the short shift route, any comments?

  Dodgy one
I just got a new one from Renault, 12 months on it! cost me £850 + £100 for a clutch, Looks nice, shame it cant be seen though lol.

The new box itself was like butter to change gear before it was fitted but at the gearstick now its w**k and notchy, Has improved over 100 miles but its far from as smooth as my 70k miler.

I went for a dealer one as the warranty is longer and i didnt have to ***** about couriering boxes and having a car in pieces for a week while i waited! If it does another 70thou before it dumps its oil i'l be happy

Tell Martin youve spoken to Jay and Tony, hes does the box for our race car and we cant fault him. Iirc a full refurb is £295, less if you need less doing. Our last bill was £180

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
to be fair, it was properly buggered. More making the point that the price isn't fixed, they have to assess the damage
