Question regarding my exhaust

  Renault Clio Dynamique 02
OK, apologies in advance for the essay!

I fitted a K&N panel filter today to my 1.2 2002 Dynamique. Very pleased with the result, however it has made me notice something. Not sure if its a direct result of the filter, or just something it has brought to my attention.

I wanted to test the sound of the engine after the filter change, so had it in neutral and took it beyond 3000rpm. Sounded good, but then when it came back down past 3000rpm, the exhaust made a strange noise (by the way, this is a standard factory fit exhaust). Kinda sounds like a backfire? This may not be the right term, but kinda goes "chug chug". The revs seem to go down steadily though, and at the point where i hear the chugging, the revs do not fluctuate.

There seem to be no ill effects though - engine does not cut out, and when in gear and the car moving, I do not seem to have the same problem.

So anyone who has installed an aftermarket air filter - have you ever encountered this? Can you shed some light on what might be the problem, if indeed it is a problem?

This may be a problem that I've always had with my car, as I have never bothered to rev at 3000rpm before I installed the air filter!

Thanks very much in advance for any help, and cheers for listening :)

Yeah popping sounds a better term to use - indeed I think it is strange on a standard exhaust but it really is a standard exhaust :S

has any part of it ever been changed? my mate had a 'standard' replacement exhaust put on his punto, it was one of the kwik fit stainless steel longlife jobbies, did give his a bit of a deeper sound. not sure if it would ever pop, he didnt drive it hard enough

Car was bought recently second hand (September)

Was not told by the previous owner of any modifications, and certainly seems that way. Will double check it tomorrow, but almost certain it is standard. The exhaust isn't deep anyway, so makes me think it is just standard

Here lies my confusion as to why I am getting such a problem, so maybe popping is not the best word to use afterall?

easiest way to tell if any part of the exhaust has ever been changed is to get down and have a look underneath, look for exhaust clamps etc. if there are any, then the exhaust has been changed at some point, as i said its probably a 'standard' replacement, but might be someone like kwik fits standard replacement, not a modification, just an OEM part.
