Questions - valver and williams

  1995 Renault Clio 1.8 16v
hi there, can someone settle an argument, i may sound stupid asking, but is the williams clio connected to williams racing in some/any way? i have no idea, i jsut liked the look always, but one friend says they were developed by williams racing team, and another mate says there is no connection in anything but the name!

Also, on the car specs of this site, it says 0-60 for williams and valver is the same, is that true?

Cheers y'all!

Williams had no input apart from the name!

0-60 is the same, but, the Williams needs a gear change to 3rd at about 58..

Point to point, the Williams is noticably quicker.

ideal, i sort of said to someone it had nothing to do with it, then thought i may have been completely wrong! the track is different is it? the person who thought it was made by williams said the handling setup is completely different, is this true? cheers for reply!

Edit - also, if the williams needs to change 3 times before 60, would it make sense to put a 16v gearbox in? or is there a reason why it doesnt go in? i heard they can be weak, mines had a rebuild about a month ago which i was happy about. Oh yeah, one other question (sorry), is everyones clutch SERIOUSLY heavy?! mines like a lorry! its got loads of travel, but is seriously heavy, after bringing it home, my foot was acheing all the next day! i have got used to it now, but still!

Yep.

i had a clio bee bop diesel once with a carry case parcel shelf, was it an option or did someone fancy making a williams diesel? lol
cheers for the info, if anyone knows of the clutch too would be greatful, hope mines not gonna break! cheers!!

If the clutch is heavy, then it might need changing - mine was stupid but a new one is so sweet now!

As for gearbox, it's not the box which makes it need a change to 3rd to hit 60 - it's the rev limiter. Standard on a Williams is 6500.. Valver is higher so it can hit 60 in 2nd.

Both boxes fit, but I wouldn't put a Valver box on a Williams. Williams box is stronger.

oh i see! rev limiter, that makes sense! oh dear, doesnt sound promising on the clutch front, its been replaced at some point this year, but like i say, very heavy! my renault 19 was bad until a new clutch, then it was lovely. how much is a half decent garage to fix clio clutch? renault 19 was engine out job, took it to a chevrolet dealership (broke down ON their forecourt) and it cost £700! cheers again!

The clutches are very heavy as standard so i wouldn't worry yourself too much

As Daz says the gearboxes in the valvers are weaker than the williams but the ratios of the 2 boxes are identical apart from the willy has a marginally 'taller' 5th gear so the top speed is slightly higher

my friend's williams clutch was very heavy but he released some slack off of the clutch cable and it is much better know, he said there was loads spare.

If it's been changed, it could be the cable.. or just normal.

They are heavy.. but not stupidly heavy. When I first got my Williams I thought it was heavy.. and it was fine.

It really is an engine out job.. got quoted £550 and £600.

Yeah, some people just undo the subframe dangle or drop the engine and box down and work on it on the floor. That's the quickest way.

clutch isnt an engine out job..
had mine changed for £120, i supplied the clutch

mr clutch.

In a Valver/Williams?

I can't see Mr Clutch doing a Valver or Williams for £120, but I could be wrong!

in regards to the 0-60 issue mines is fitted with a hillpower stage 1 kit conversion which includes a chip with increased rev limit which enables the car to reach 60mph without changing up to 3rd gear thus reducing 0-60 time.
