Quick question - Checking oil

Should you run the engine for like 10 minutes first and check it whilst the engine is running? Or check it whilst the engine is cold and isn't running. Which is more accurate?

Engine off, and should have been off for at least 10 minutes on flat ground is my rule of thumb.

Engine on you are getting nowhere lol!

Cheers mate, so the engine should be cold or run until warm then switched off for 10 mins to let the oil settle and check?

just make sure it's on the flat and switched off for (as you say) about ten minutes - from cold all the oil will be in the sump so you will get a good reading, if it's been running then leaving it for ten mins or so gives the oil chance to drain back down.

That's almost as bad as my neighbour filling her oil up til it came out the filler cap !

The oil will be in the engine when it's running, think about it...

Better safe than sorry though!

You should be checking it weekly.

I had a mechanic do it I was too lazy and be had the right adapter for the sump plug .
