Quick response needed please

Car  Mrs' valver! &myV6 veccy

Does anyone know if my clio will pass its MOT this august if i remove the back wiper?

If not how do people get away with it?

im not sure myself thats why i asked!

Is it a case of IF you have one it has to be working, otherwise no probs?

Reason i need quick replies is that my car is in pieces for the respray as we speak, the aerials bein removed today so wondering whether to do the back wiper whilst the cars bare!

If it isnt there they cant test it. I wouldnt remove it though. It does come in handy every now and again.

I was racing once and tried to activate the rear wiper/washer. It didnt work. When I pitted and we changed drivers I asked my chief mechanic about it. Turns out he removed the motor to save weight. I would have preferred to have it working though, as we were running in the slowest class with a Golf GTi 16V, and a clear view out the back would have been nice.

Like they say you dont miss it til its gone!

The rear wiper is NOT a testable item.

So no need to worry

Actually,

If its on your car then it must work, but if you remove it then it will still pass, its crazy eh !

same goes with fog light etc.. if they are on the car and they dont work it will fail.. if you take them out completly and take it back it will pass.. what a crock of sh*t an MOT is..

KDF please note.

From a legal standpoint, if its fitted it should work.

From an MOT standpoint, only testable items are (of course) tested. If its not on the list of testable items - it will not fail but should result in an advisory note. Therefore a vehicle with an inoperative rear wiper would not fail the MOT. If the tester was sharp, he/she would advise that its not working. But as its not a testable item, why would the tester even check its operation?

I AM an MOT tester and I know the rules.

The MOT is not a crock of SH1T, its there to make sure your car is in a roadworthy condition. If your car is maintained properly, then it will not fail an MOT because it will be in tip top condition.

Rant over.

Bob RTE and MOT tester and quality controller!

Yes, MOTs are quality controlled as well!

Cheers guys youre stars!!!

Removed it yesterday, nice n smooth on the back now except for the lock!

In the process of spraying it now mate, its half done, finishing it off in the morning, but it looks sweet at the mo!

My advice would be to get a bodyshop to do it. I didnt do mine, my dad did. But he used to own a bodyshop so he knows what hes doin!

i think what BobRTE failed to mention......is that an MOT is only really valid for the day it is issued........what happens to the car after it has passed its MOT, the testing station or government has no control over.....i have seen cars that have been in bad accidents .....still with valid MOTs !!!.....& they have been put on the road again with the previous MOT !!

heres a good one......if you have a spare tyre that is illegal....your car will fail its MOT...but if you remove the tyre b4 you put it in for MOT....it will pass....Also the speedometer is not part of the MOT !!

I myself put customers cars in for MOTs & constantly find things that the so called qualified MOT tester has missed & this is using different MOT stations....so just because a car has an MOT....dont think for one second that the car is road worthy !! because i would say on average 7 times out of 10.....it isnt !..........................but anyway.......i dont think this is about clios...well it could be.....(p.s MR Admin.....i was refering to clios being tested at MOT stations!)

Fatherted

We can all form our own opinion of what an MOT is or is not. You are correct when you say that the MOT is only valid at the time of test, but the spare is not a testable item and therefore a spare tyre that is/has:- bald, flat, cuts, gouges or even missing will not result in a failure.

The MOT is carried out by qualified technicains and they have to use their discretion on many items, it is down to the tester. All MOT testing stations have to carry out quality control checks on their testers to make sure they are carrying out the test correctly. You can always appeal against an MOT if you think it should or should NOT have failed/passed.

Another rant over!

BobRT, im sorry but you are wrong, if there is a spare tyre in your vehicle at the time of MOT & it is illegal....the vehicle WILL fail its MOT.....i know this for 2 reasons........1. i have had it on customers failure sheets.........2. i asked my fathers friend whom is an inspector for the Ministry of Transport......let me know if your place needs an inspection...ill give him a ring !!!!!

Also your car will fail its MOT if the numberplate is cracked, which seems a minor detail really!

the mot is a load of crap. Point in fact, car passed MOT on the Tuesday, sold it to a mate on the Friday, he crashed it on the Saturday. When taken to a Mini yard we put it on bricks and took the wheels off, then watched in amazement as the car sank into the bricks! Yeah, that car was safe!

that said why is the mot after 3 years? My company car wil be on 100K by then, my Clio might be on about 30K, something smells a bit iffy to me there, surely the Astra should have one WAY before the Clio?

Surely an MOT should be like a service, every X miles or 12 months? Just a thought..............

I will be phoning the Ministry on Monday to clarify this spare wheel issue.

I am not going to be drawn into an arguement regarding this.

Will post my answer on Monday.

Bob RTE

it will be good if you do clarify it bob........coz if they should fail then you guys have been nice to all the people that have had illegal spare tyres.........& if they should pass then next time i get one that fails i can shove the failure sheet up the testers ar*e ( where the sun dont shine!)..

I have to agree with you about the mileage difference when it comes to an MOT on a three year-old car. For instance, I never do more than 3,500 miles a year in my own car and if I kept it for three years it would only have done just over 10,000 miles whereas a rep who does about 40,000 miles annually, would after three years, have done about 120,000 miles. Both cars would be due an MOT - !!!!!

I cant answer this question.

It does seem a bit daft that the vehicle only requires an inspection after 3 years irrespective of mileage.

How would it be policed though?

Make it a compulsory test when the vehicle is 1 year old and then every year after that would seem the best policy.

Cars that do nominal mileage should pass easily anyway, but would you want to pay £30 odd quid every year to have your car tested?

Thoughts please.

Bob RTE

I dont think cars should need testing until they have done at least 30,000 miles - then I would never need an MOT as I have never had a car which has done many miles, since I only do about 3,500 annually!!

Obviously reps cars would need checking much more often as they are on the road every day and cover thousands of miles annually.

I think I HAS to be time-based (annually) and not just milage (maybe a combination) If you imagine an old car that has just passed an MOT, still it in a garage and its never used for 5 years, take it out and I bet its not road worthy so a time-based/milage offset rule would probably be the safest, like services, 12,000 or 1year etc
