Quick spraying question....

I currently have my 197 in my garage masked off all the front apart from the front top grille... it has had a weird watermark stain all over it for months, apparently a common thing with the grills.

Just a quick question, im spraying it matt black now.... should I laquer it?

Reason I ask because, they grills themself are flat in apperance and not shiny, but now if I just leave it matt black with no laquer will it mark over time? i.e. does it need laquer protection?

did you prep the plastic in anyway so the paint sticks to it and doesnt start flaking of in a few weeks ?

Hi,

I used de-greasing stuff to make sure they were completely clean.

Yea its a mission to get the grilles out, jack car up, take wheels off, arch liners out, numerous screws, take front bumper off etc...

Just a general question wondering do they need lacquer as a "protection" ?

IIRC you dont use lacquer with matt paints

no they dont need lacquer. but you would be alot better prepping the plastic before painting as when it starts flaking its gonna look a real mess and take 10x longer to prep then respray again

Yea, was just something was going to try to see if it works mate, if it doesnt im going to buy the grills... but wanted to try this first !

Ok welll ill give a few layers... and then wont lacquer it and see what happens over next few weeks

it might last longer it all depends on how you treat it .. dont blast it with a jetwash etc

im sure you can get a sort of matt type laquer but it's not really needed imo, just mke sure you sand it down first and get some primer on there and you should be fine

I think you can get a Satin Lacquer which is not Gloss, but similar to a Matt finish

I'd give it a key first with some fine wet n dry , 320 grit , then plastic primer ,couple of colour coats then matt lacquer .

doesnt need laquering, but definatly needs prepping or the paint will just flake off at the first sight of water.

Ahhhh sugar.....

...Ive refurbished a set of alloys before.... and to be fair.... they were spot on.... lasted for about 2 years until I sold the car... didnt flake and looked perfect.... obviously with those was hours of priming and sanding down etc...

...however because this grill has a sort of pimply surface I thought I couldnt sand it down because all the pimples will just dissapear...

...gave it about 6/7 layers of paint! Chuffed with the final result.... however....after what you guys have said now about "prep" im not sure how long it will last

Anyways.... heres a quick pic of finished result!

Looks ok that , should do tho' as its just been sprayed . Time will tell how long it lasts tho . Could be a new grill on the way in the not too distant future .

did you put paper behind the grill mate so when you sprayed it it hasnt painted half your engine bay black. otherwise looks like a decent job

That's going to come off again within weeks. Cleaning isn't enough before painting it.

Yea, like I said guys , just going to give it a go, see if it lasts... if not ill buy a new grill.... repalced a headlamp yesterday because was constantly steaming up... so just thought id give this a whirl... only a few quid for a can of spray.... if it dont ill buy new grille
