RAM Issues

  182 Trophy 019/500
I ordered some new the other day for my parents laptop. Installed it no problems. The BIOS says its got 512mb of memory which is correct (It had 256mb and i've just fitted another 256mb card). When in windows, if you right click my computer then go to properties, it says it only has 384mb ram. :S

Hope someone can help.

Operating system: XP SP2
Laptop make: Compaq

128mb is being used for onboard graphics by the looks of it.

Is there anyway I can find out what memory the onboard graphics is using?

Oh, and thaks for your help! You always sort out my IT issues :approve: :hail:

It's automatically assigned 128mb so it's not a variable amount.

I take it that's what you meant in your question?

You could possibly change the allocation in the BIOS if you want to have less for the graphics.

Yeah i tried that one but the BIOS settings is pretty much none existant. It allows you to change the time but thats about it :S

Can you use RAM to boost graphics on a PC?

Only up to a certain size, I think that 128Mb is the highest on most machines. Graphics cards handle it better too though.
