Rare but recursive engine start problem on my 172!

Hi all,

i have an old problem on my 172, at the engine start-up. I bring the car to the
assistance in the past but they were unable to solve the problem too! :dapprove:

One time on... fifteen? My engine doesn't start. I can ear like a TA-TA-TA-TA-TA of the "start-up motor" (if it is, i dunno the exact term for this part :dapprove: ) and
the engine does not start. Then if i try again, it start quickly and well.
I can't really understard, it's "rare" but sometimes happen. Do someone know of some
issue on some part of the engine? I also have the impression that the engine start it's always
a bit lazy... It's not so... clean or smooth as one expect it to be. The engine have only 18.000 km because the old one fails at 33.000 km, but i don't think that the assistance change also the accessories like the ignition leads and so on, so i suppose they may have more than 50k km!

Any idea about this?

Is it the original battery ? Maybe you need a new 1 ?

Sounds like the starters centrafugal thingie is on the blink.
On most cars I'd say hit it with a hammer but its not easy to get to on a Clio so a new one is your best bet.

So i'm not alone!
I was also thinking about that, and about the battery for the lazy start... The strange
is that i have no power loss, so should not be any "bad connected" power cable neither!

Yes it is, and i will buy another one soon, cause it also look bad. Jones did you try
another battery on your car yet?

mine did it today, never done it before, just conked out. started fine after that. got me worried though!

I had the same problem with mine last year after my car had been not used for 3 weeks. It turned over very slowly as if the battery was almost flat, and just when I thought I was going to have to take the battery off and charge it, it started. I took her for a 30 mile drive (without lights on) to give the battery a boost and touch wood, havent had the problem since. So it could just be a case of you giving the battery a little boost.

It could aslo be due to a 'sticky starter' which could just mean its got abit dirty and needs taking off, cleaning, re-greasing and putting back. I personally wouldn't want to do this myself as it looks like abit of a b**ch to get to.

Crikey! On looking at some of the problems some people are having with their cars, I have either been very lucky with my Clio or I have all those problems to come. ~Cringes~

Thanks all, i'll try for sure to put a new battery I'll write the result when i'll do! I think i'll left the starter as the last option... :|

The batteries on the clios are sh*te imo only 420amps , go for a heavy duty one if you can get one to fit , about 620 amps , your a bit limited because of the space where the battery fits .

mine often doesn't like starting first time, when hot usually. I figured since it has done it for the last 6 months and nothing's fallen off, i wouldn't worry.

Always thought it was a silly french immobiliser. As soon as you try again in turns over as quickly as f**k.
