Rattle on a 172 02, with aux belt on!

  Trophy Turbo :)
Im after some help. I know these cars inside out and back to front. so serious answers only please

2002 172 came to me via a mate he had the belts done with a water pump from a "garage" i use the term garage lightly, the car had developed a splutter and a nasty noise!

On removal of the top mount the belt was LOOSE i mean very very loose, you could hardly see the Renault working on his new belt!!

I suggested that the fact that the tensioner was on backwards was probably the issue and that since it sounded like a DCI the VVT may be on its way. So i replaced the full belt kit with a Gates kit and a Brand new VVT pully. Started the car with the aux belt off and the noise has gone! HORAY!

Installed the Aux belt with new tension and belt and the noise is still there! i have replaced the Power Pump, Alty and air con, even the crank pully!! the noise is only there when its gt the aux belt on!! its like a rattly noise and sounds like its coming from the VVT area. remove the aux belt all goes away. He had a brand new Water pump fitted when the garage did the belt. its the only thing ive not changed!!!

any help would be greatly appreciated, i am sick of the dam thing! :)

Silly thing to suggest Andy but I've seen it happen before and it gives similar issues, especially if some numpty has been playing about before...

... Check the 10mm securing bolts on both the PAS pump pulley and water pump pulley. If they're loose they flap about and give a noise which varies from sounding like the bottom end has gone to a top end rattle. Also, have a good feel of the bearing races for signs of play as cheap 'white box' £20 water pumps are notoriously bad for failures after a few months so its possible one is dead straight out the box.
