rattling cat

  1998 BMW e46 323i
only a few months old, fitted it myself, slight rattle at first, now it sounds like an m3 when booted and on the overrun, but not in a good way.

Is there anything I can do to it?

Elaborate, i dont understand what you mean. Are you on about increased noise and popping on the overrun because it will do both of them. Has your exhaust sagged?

Thanks for the reply Gav,

there's a metallic high pitch rattle/vibration that sounds like it's coming from the cat. today i could hear the system blowing. guy at the exhaust place near work says it's the rear joining between mid-section and rear silencer. just come a bit loose. he reckons the metallic noise is from here too. Exhaust was too hot to work on, but just needs stripping, cleaning and joining again.

Gonna get down to ATS before work tomorrow, really don't need the silencer to drop off like the last one did on the motorway.

I've still got te annoying rattle; it's from the cat'. If it is, like I've read on here, just the lambda sensors that are loose or a heat shield, can I put this right with the exhaust in situ?

Was going to get underneath the car now, but the heavens have opened here in Liverpool.

Many people get an artermarket exhaust.
Just check all the seals etc on the exhaust.

all seals are A OK, the whole system is only a few months old, and was expertly fitted; by me:approve:

I just found the heat shield was unattached in places and popped out to B&Q to get some wing nuts and washers. can't do any harm to secure it, when the exhaust's cooled down.
