Rattling noise

  Fiesta ST
Hi, have a mk1 ph3, when I lift off the accelerator theres like a rattling type noise which as far as i can tell is coming from the front of the car. Any idea what it is?

I might be, pissed me off till i found it!

The rubber stop that is by the end of the bonnet closed, it was loose so i got a bit of card and shoved it in the gap between the rubber and the metal and no more rattle, try that

I doubt its that as its coming from the bottom of the car, I will give that a go though. Sounds a little like something metal dragging on the floor, not a big piece of metal, just small. But theres nothing hanging on the bottom of the car and if something was dragging it would make the noise all the time, not just when I lift off the accelerator.

It's hard to say from what you have said TBH. Could you try and expand on what sort of noise it is and where it's coming from? It could possibly be the exhaust but it's hard to say from your description.

I had this exact same problem last week. If it's a high pitched chirpy metal scraping noise that sounds like metal fan blades just tapping against the chassis or something like that, and only when you take your foot off the accelerator and let it come down through the revs (not when you aren't in gear), then it might be a gasket in the exhaust.

I didn't believe the guy at the garage when he told me because it sounded like it was coming from the front of the car, but he replaced the gasket and now the rattling has gone. It's a gasket inbetween the manifold and where it connects to the exhaust system in the engine. It's made of metal mesh and is very flexible to allow the manifold to move when the engine rocks so it doesn't snap.

Where abouts are you based?

I had this same noise in my 172. In my case it was when down shifting and letting the revs slow you down. It also happened when going over rough surfaces or bumps. Then yesterday when i shut my car door quite hard noticed the sound again. took off the under tray but couldnt get under the car to see properly, but did discover my gearbox is/has been leaking. Took the car in this morning to my local garage and they found the rattle to be caused by a coolant pipe that had come loose from a clip, said it was behind the fan cowling. The best bit is they didnt charge me a penny for the work, but gave them a £10 tip.

Try kicking the tyres or rocking the frame under the bumper to see if you can locate the rattle.

It could also be what cliokiz mentioned as if that gasket comes apart it still stay in place but as it's split the different parts start to rattle.
