RE: Clio non-start causes?

  Silver 172 cup
Used the clio yesterday morning, everything was fine, then yesterday afternoon it just wouldn't start.

It was trying to start but just wouldnt actually start... wasn't the battery because the lights etc work.

I have noticed over past week revs have been a bit erratic and sometimes drop very close towards zero when pushing the clutch in when coming to a stop on initial start up.

The engine has started again now but the revs problem is still there (more so than normal clio cold start revving).

I have had the car nearly two years, when I bought it the plugs had just been done at 50,900 miles and since then I haven't had them changed, current mileage is 70,000 - could it be the spark plugs?

Cheers

Start with ckeaning the TB but it could be a lamda or cts issue also

cleaned the throttle body last week, its something I regularly do.

Is it worth changing plugs? If it was Lamda sensor then MPG would drop wouldn't they? (MPG hasn't been affected)

Not necessarily no, it could be an issue with the heater element but it could be the cts or something else. It needs a proper diagnostic session really, not a code read.

What would be the best thing to do then? take it to local garage?

If you don't have decent diagnostic kit then yes.

The problem is if yiu drive it to a garage and the issue only manifests at cild start then there won't be anything wrong to spot.

Of course if it's doing it all the time, irrgardless of engine temp then it won't really matter.

Just been having a search about on google etc tonight whilst I was free and a lot of searches / forum posts etc point towards the TDC sensor needing a clean (or possible replacement). I've got a bit of spare time tomorrow so may give this a go, what do I use to clean it with?

I had symptoms similar to you, I took the TDC sensor off and sanded the pin (at the end of the plastic) and its been fine since.

i'd say try that before spending any money on it, new TDC sensors are around £24.

So I just use standard sand paper? How much should I sand it down by?

Thanks for reply.

Just take the rust off of it and no more mate, it just needs agitated as opposed to sanded right back.

Do you know where it's located btw?

I've seen a few diagrams and photos, I believe you have to take the airbox off first? From there I should be able to spot it against pics I've seen?

Aye take the air box out, there are two matrix pipes in a plastic bracket that unclips and gives you a little more room as well!
