Rear beams

Hey folks,
This has probably been covered before. However the search function doesn’t seem to be operational.

I’m going to do another rear beam and back end tidy up on my new(er) project clio. On the last car I dropped the beam sent it off etc. Which all took time, so I’m thinking this time it may be easier to buy a used beam and get that refurbed so I can then just bosh it straight on.

so here is the question. What are the differences, if any between a 172 beam and a 182 beam? Guess they are a universal fit on ph2 clios but would be keen to know if anything is different.

thanks

Russ

Pretty sure there are at least two variants with different diameters of “ARB” welded inside the L section?

I seem to remember keeping a stripped spare 172 & a stripped known-straight 182 cup beam in my shed for a few weeks & telling the difference by measuring OD with a vernier. If I’m wrong it seems a strange thing for my poor memory to have made up 😂🤷‍♂️

Yep later 182 beams have supports under the spring platforms and also have a thicker bar in the middle.

Just taken my 172 cup beam out and replaced with a 182 beam.

I’m looking at sorting my rear beam in the next few months. Is there a specialist place who will do this or is it just a case of tackling it yourself and sending it off for powder coating?

Give Ben at VTEC Direct a call, he should be able to do it. [emoji106]

It’s not really a if task to sort yourself. Drop the beam, cut out the bushes. Then send for blasting and coating somewhere. Press in new bushes and refit. The hassle is removing, refitting and bleeding brakes. Otherwise it’s a pretty easy job

If going down the PMS stiffening kit is there much difference doing it to a 182 beam than a 172 beam or both on par once the kit has been fitted?

@Touring_Rob when you epoxy mastic your rear beam, how did you apply it? Just sourcing a rear beam now and it looks to have already been blasted. It looks from what I have seen online as it needs thinning and spraying. Or can it be thinned to a level you can brush/roller the stuff on?
