Rear brake bias

  172 gravel rally
I have built a 172 rally car and have been having issues with too much rear brake bias. I have removed the abs unit and have a proportioning valve fitted to the rear line but I still have too much rear brakes. My question is whether a non abs master cylinder will fit an abs 172 and if so will this have an affect? I have heard that removing the abs fuse will give 50/50 braking so I am assuming that a non abs car would have different valving to supply 70/30, 60/40 braking instead of using the abs unit to control the bias. I'm not allowed a peddle box in my regs or that would be next purchase.

I really doubt that without the fuse the braking is 50/50, here all rally Clios remove the ABS included mine, and if we had a 50/50 breaking bias we would be spinning every time we brake.

On the 172 Cup (which has no ABS) there is a brake compensator that reduces the effort on the rear brakes. It is not connected to the suspension so is always at its minimum bias.

Maybe you need to fit one of these.

In MR337 of the Renault repair manual section 38 there is a note:

'Important: If the ABS fuse is removed, be careful during road tests not to brake hard as the REF function is no longer activated (indentical front and rear pressure), so there is a risk the vehicle will spin.'

Without the proportioning valve connected on the rear line the car has 50/50 brakes. I have to set the valve to maximum reduction to bring the brakes near to a decent setting, but at this setting the valve seems to give a capacitive affect when holding the pedal over time and brings the bias back near to 50/50.

interesting, i bough mine used so i dunno how the removed the ABS, it does have a lever proportioning valve, i assumed the other ones didnt.

maybe u should change ur valve, i have no problem with unbalanced breaking at all and the valve is not full front bias.

Getting rid of evil ABS is a must.

run 1 line off the master clyinder into a T piece then into both fronts

the other line into a T piece, into a bias valve, into another T piece then to both rears

That's exactly what I have but still too much rear brakes. My car doesn't have a compensator as standard on the rear line, just the proportioning valve I fitted and a hydralic handbrake. The ABS has been removed.

even with it on maximum front (on the valve) you have too much rear??

i've got a wilwood lever type 9 position (i think) bias valve in mine and its spot on
