Rear brakes dragging

  '04 172, '03 Hirsch 9-5
I've been noticing for a little while that the car seems more laboured to take of from lights etc.

On investigation the rear brakes are dragging! - I jacked up the rear took the handbrake off and sure enough the wheels take a bit of effort to move and you can hear them dragging - I've never had this on any other car!?

So I fully disconnected the handbrake cable and it's better but not great. Ive put a spanner on the lever where the cable goes into to fully release them as it were but it still drags.

Is there any adjustment for how far back the handbrake mechanism releases on the callipers?

Am I missing something?

Not sure if this is exactly the same problem but..

I had the same sort of problem, and also if sitting overnight, when I pulled away in the morning the rear wheels would lock up slightly and then be fine.

Took it to a garage and the guy says he sees it all the time, its the brake shoes slipping out of place and catching causing it to drag/jam. A common problem in clio's and 206's as they use the same brakes. Apparently its because something to do with the drum is now stuck on with adhesive rather than riveted which is what they used to do. Cost cutting, as usual.

Needed a new pair of brake shoes and something else + labour @ 75 quid.

Could be the same problem, not entirely sure, hope this helps.

Yep your right thats a common issue on those but this is a 172 so rear disks.

£75 labour for rear disk hum bit steap depends where you live and where you went though,

  Lots of Alfas
Make sure the pads are on the right way round, the pad towards the piston has a bit that sticks out which rests in the slot on the piston. Carefully peel back the rubber seals and stick a bit of grease on the sliders, careful not to get any mud in there.

Thanks everyone. I'll give it a good going over then and hopefully sort it out.

What grease should I use for the sliders?
