rear pads wearing away at angle?

excuse my noviceness. im an accountant not a mechanic! was replacing rear discs and pads last night but couldnt get the passenger rear to go on without the pads bein so tight to disc the wheel wouldnt move freely. the old pads are worn at an angle. its only mm but obviously something not right.

any experience of this? am i missing something simple?

Think your piston in caliper needs pushing in. Get some large mole grips and place around piston. Clamp onto it and whine it in to caliper. The after refitting it all, please the brake pedal a few times til hard.

we tried that. mate had some crazy tool that is for getting the caliper right in. albeit i dont think it was being used properly! the caliper piston woulg only go as far in as showing maybe 1.5mm 'poking out' if you know what i mean. ie: it wasnt completely flush with the caliper casing.

The usual way to fit new pads and discs is to undo the handbrake cable or slacken off the adjuster, wind back the piston, wire brush all the dust off and use brake cleaner to clean all the brake parts. The new disc and pads should fit in then. When reassembling the parts apply a smear of copper or brake grease on the edge of the pads where they come into contact with the caliper so they don't stick.
If you are still having trouble fitting them check the caliper is mounted correctly on the hub, someone may have got it wrong before you.

Do not press the piston back into the caliper. They have to be wound in otherwise you will damage the caliper. You can buy a tool to wind the pistons back in. Its common on french cars for this type of piston to be used.

you did release the handbrake didn't you?

yeah mate. its only on one side that its doing it. wound the caliper piston in as much as possible. will be really obvious when we work it out but just cant get our heads round it!

Were the pads you took out fitted the right way?

yep. exactly the same. the pads that came out - the worn ones - were worn at angles. one half of the pad was worn to metal, the other half still had life,

ok, one pad on each side should have a small nipple on it, this has to locate in a slot in the piston. You have to turn the piston so that it lines up

Someone had fitted my old pads the wrong way which caused them to wear at an angle. Pad with the ridge should go on the piston side iirc

i mean that i will check with mate that thats how the old ones were fitted!

but still if thats how old ones were fitted this will explain the wearing away at an angle, but why when the new pads are fitted as above, the wheel doesnt move freely?
