rebuilding machines, rejoining to AD - same name

  Rav4
Hi,

Just wondering what process you guys do for this.

Basically, each office has a logical naming convention for desktops/laptops and so on.

For instance, WA101 and so on.

We are rebuilding some machines, one by one, as they are all so different, there is no point in creating images.

Anyhow, when you rebuild a machine that was on the domain, name it with the same name it previously had, what routine do you undertake for instance the DNS records previously created on the server?

Hope this same sense.

thanks,

You wont need to do anything, the machine will update its own DNS records either via a DHCP server or the machine itself. Your DNS server should have aging and scavenging turned on, on all your DNS zones too so it will delete any expired records.

we have roaming profiles at work and there was some weird goings on with one particular office and me and my boss could never work out what the problem was.

then one day i spotted these computers were making some weird errors in the event log to do with the computer account.

they were dell machines and i noticed that WSUS thought they were HPs... I knew that the PC's in this office used to be HP and they got an upgrade.

i think what happened is someone upgraded the pc's and gave the new ones the same name, which allowed them into the domain on the existing computer account... but it didn't quite work properly and was causing weird problems with their profiles.

maybe if you are just rebuilding the PC it won't be so bad but I'd probably delete the computer account and join the domain from fresh if you notice anything weird?

anyone ever had anything similar and can explain what i've come across with a bit more knowledge than i have :D

Cheers guys.

I normally delete the account and rejoin the machine. Obviously the hostnames will still be on the DNS servers, so we have it setup just as Jacko said :)

I'll have a play around.

Excellent stuff.
