Recovering Iphone data?

Is there anyway to actually recover lost data after a system restore?
I've tried a few things to no avail, lots of the software online seems poor/scams.

Anything work or is it a lost cause?

Iphone hasn't been backed up etc!

Is it correct to say the iphone is like a flash drive, and once 'wiped' its gone forever, totally unrecoverable ?
