Recovery partition

Okay after recently purchasing a new HP laptop that came with a recovery partition I have created a recovery disc using windows 7. What I am asking is the recovery disc a replacement for the partition. If so I will be able to format it and install Ubuntu on it?

It should be. Probably to be totally sure, leave the recovery partition alone as these days it's like 5% of the total HDD space and simply install Ubuntu instead of the Windows OS.

I would rather keep the windows OS as I like Windows 7 as-well as the compatibility for itunes, Ubuntu would be used more for casual computer use when i need to boot up quicker to just check something etc etc.

partition the main partition into 2 parts, leave like 2gig for ubuntu and the rest for windows. ubunto has a installer thatll do all this for you i think
