Redlining and that burning smell !!

Just a quick question, is it bad for a car if you rev it very high? And also whats is that strong burning smell you get when you ragg your car, its hard to describe but its kinda a rubber smell, thanks

could it be clutch youre smelling? Maybe its just a little rubber smell from the tyres if youve spun away.

I never get a burning smell when Im driving hard maybe a waft of toasted brake pad but thats it.

Its the hamsters in your engine catching fire

Look its a 1.4 town car what do you expect it was designed for shopping runs not 0-60 sprints, they are good engines assuming its the 1.4 energy but they will only take so much abuse. slightly before the redline is the best time to change anyway when peek torque and peek power cross about 5-6k not 6.5k. The burning smell is probably clutch plates being fried.

took my 1.4 to 6k for the first time today, didnt get a wierd smell - but i had been on a dual carridgeway for like 30 mins, so im pretty sure it was warm

is it ok to do this then?

dont want to damage anything

Definately sounds like your clutch slipping under load!! Unless you keep your foot on it!! Its the sort of smell that makes you gag (eggy sh*te smell)

Try putting it in 5th at 30mph and put your accel foot to the floor, if the revs rise out of proportion with your speed - the clutch is on its way out.

Hate to stamp on your parade (is that even the correct saying ??) but I have had the same sorta smell in my 172, which I think I narrowed down to the brake pads/disks.. heh, only the once mind you and I was braking from 100mph - 0 a few times.

Never rev your car hard when cold or when stationary (hot or cold) this creates bore wash very bad.

When the engine is under load reving an engine which was designed to be driven fast is no problem. (Good oil and warm engine required).

Engines that are frequently driven hard do not coke up as much and tend to run more freely.

Just make sure the oil is changed when it should be. Use no more than a semi synthetic (Fully synthtic can push through the rings and burn in the chamber cause - lots of blue smoke).

Always make sure the car is warmed up. If the temp gauge gets up to temp thats just the water not the engine oil. Drive it for at least 10 minutes before you give it some gas

The smell is your clutch, dont worry about it

Mine hits the redline regularly.. infact, it lives at about 4k - 6k.. but only once its warmed up.

Mk1, Phase3.. 1.2 DIET

I get a funny smell when I get back from driving, its when-ever I have been up to speed, not nesecerally ragging it. I couldnt find what it was, its just around the engine bay area. It could be the brakes or just the fact my engine is old and there will be all sorts of crap around the engine bay that start to burn away (oil/grime/elephant poo) when the engine gets hot. Not worried myself, its still going, its serviced regulary and if it starts to be dodgy its sorted straight away.
