Reduced size plates

  Peugeot 306 HDi
I've seen a couple of cars on here with number plates that are cut down to the edge of the letters. They aren't any smaller proportionally (i.e. they aren't 3/4 size), it's just the width that's reduced.

Am I right in thinking these are legal? Where could I buy them from, how much and what are people's opinions? They'd be on a Silvervisioned, but otherwise standard, black Dynamique.

Obviously I like them, but opinions anyway please.

Thanks

Privding the plates is as it should be & you leave an 11mm gap from the edge of the letters to the edge of the plate all the way round, your ok.

So essentially, I could have them cut down by the size of the England thing without any problem?

Ive not any problems with mine!! The letters+spacing are all legal (the same as my originals) However, i struggled having these made,so i ending up going to a sign company. These are technically "signs", therfore i have no postcodes or names on them

think u mean me will?? Ull hav no chance at halfords, or any other garage for that matter. The reason being, a few years ago, laws were brought in which meant any establishment that made number plates, ie>dealerships, body shops, halfords etc, had to at least put there postcode somewer on the plate, most companies also put there name on to,presumably for advertisng purposes. This is so that the police can trace back to were the plate the plate was made, and to stop illegal plates in crazy fonts+sizes etc. Its also to stop cars being driven around on duplicate plates, thats why you need your cars logbook when having plates made, even when you want a back yellow one for a trailor!!

So goin back to the beginning, unless you can find a garage thats willing to risk getting in trouble (which is unlikely), the only way your going to get small plates, is to have some "signs" made. From pretty much any sign writing shop,or online. Oh, and some sign shops make you sign a disclaimer stating its a sign, and your not going to use it as a number plate(lol), as an added protection for them. Hope this helps

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=20991&d=1184075829 The plate isnt very clear on this one,but its the only pic ive got,lol

Sorry, yes I did mean you Marshallahsram. Ok, thanks. How much did they set you back? I could always stick the others back on come MoT time anyway.

Daz, I do like the way they look. i'll have a look into it.

I paid about £25 i think. I was a little nervous at first, so i always carried my standard arnold clark ones in my boot, but after about 18 months with them on two cars (Not at the same time) ive never had a problem with them, i dont bother anymore, lol

Mine was £16 delivered I believe, have a look at www.fancyplates.com they'll make plates to any size. I just measured my standard one for the lettering then added 11mm all round to keep it legal.

The only thing you have to watch out for is screw holes!! They were visible on my old clio, and i hated it. It never crossed my mind when i ordered them,i only realised when i put them on!! But when i got this one,i made sure there wasnt any,its plates had always been stuck on :) Obviously, this is only an issue if your plate has less characters+smaller characters (the number one uses alot less space than, than say a number two) or if u choose to hav a tiny plate made up,lol

Thanks for your help, ye both. Yeah, I'm not too worried about the screw holes because I'll stick a cap over in whichever colour - unfortunately my funds haven't stretched to the private plate I want yet. Ok, well I'll get measuring and order them up then. Cheers.

just to let eveyone know - as of last week, there are a new set of reasons for rejection in the MOT test regarding number plates - one of which being no bs mark, manufacturers name and postcode

Aye, but I have a spare set. I don't have a problem with making plates legit, but I don't want to advertise a dealership (it's part of the reason I want to change them), so why shouldn't I be allowed plain plates with a BS mark. Ah well, tis the law I guess.

That must only apply to a car after a certain year? Valvers and such like cant be covered by that as it was not law to have postcodes etc on plates when they were produced.

mine with 3/4. looks better on personalised plate with less numbers/letters though like makavelli's

£16?! I just sized mine up, standard font, no border, no badge - £24!

£26 for me for both on that site.

I think these plates only look good on color coded bumpers....

Well I'm not a colour coding fan. Black bump strips break the car up a bit and adds interest. Besides it's a black car so there isn't a lot of point colour coding it in my opinion.

Reduced plates will be a Christmas job, when I'm home from Uni, I think.
