Removing and refitting F4R head + valves

  172 Race Car
id sell it as a repair job/spares and look for a low miler one to stick in tbh.

Who knows what else isnt right in there

Think I might go throw the head at Dans head.

hopefully the corner will catch his eye or something

Why is piston 1 a differnet colour to the other

I dont know what colour they should be but if no 2 was leaking oil and its the same colour as 3 & 4 are they leaking too?

no idea why #1 is a different colour :dapprove:

mattjk, no oil was leaking?

I dont know matey I was just making assumptions. There must be a reason why its different colour...

in the 2nd pic it looks a bit oily compared to cyl 3 dont you think? Need to see it properly really grr

number 1 cylinder has heavy detonation damage in that picture

lean running, excessive ignition advance (unsuitable for the compression ratio or octane of fuel). could be as simple as an ht lead on the wrong cylinder or an injector faulty.

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
i had some fuel rail issues on cyl 1, so it's probably the running lean that's caused it

I don't have £700! :(

do me a deal for just the engine on its own (no manifolds or ancillaries) and on an exchange basis :D

  C63 AMG, F430 & 172
just take the engine to AWT, get ben to sort it for you? he fixes most peoples f**k-ups anyway!

or keep your eyes out for a cheaper engine, but then you have to replace the belts on it anway.... mine seems a bargin! it had new plugs too!

Matt, You could try just dropping a valve in and see what happens. Just use the old head bolts and put a new HG on. While it's in bits and you have some time on your hands, you might aswell. The valve could be because that rocker has slipped off, nothing to do with the tensioner being on wrong!

Chin up fella :)

Yeah do the thing that stan suggested with the parafin or torch just replace the valve its not going to be to expensive worth a shot i think

  Megane 225
oh i see

so, based on these pics, what should I do next? scrap the engine or repair it?

I'm a total noob at engines, but I'm willing to give it a go! I've got this far, might as well continue!

I've a full set of pistons with rods and rings if ya need them!

the problem is I now need to buy the valve compressor tool

and a torque wrench

and the cam timing tool :(

as well as the valve itself (and seal? :S)

Valve compressors are about a tenner mate! I'll post you mine if you want? Torque wrench are about £30. I'd borrown locking tools though if you can.

To put the valve in, you'll need; Valve, grinding paste, stem seal (You have to buy them in sets IIRC but they're not expensive)....

Like i said mate, your not far from my parents in W.sussex.

I can do all the valve replacement, GH, cambelt on site if you need help.

I've put parafin in the upturned head and got no bubbles or anything

I bought a spring compressor, though I've no idea how you're meant to use it... no matter though, cause I think I found the problem? :D

DSCF1410.jpg

broken in 3!

bent valve:
DSCF1409.jpg

(I tapped this out lightly with a hammer and pin punch, that ok?)

is this the collet thing:
DSCF1411.jpg

there was no circlip on it like there are on the other ones...

stem seal:
DSCF1412.jpg

ok to re-use or just buy another one?

then as I was turning the head over, these popped out :S

can't see where they would've gone :S

Good work son I'm really impressed with what your doing :D. Sorry I cant help you I with the techie questio but i hope once you sorted the valves shes okay!!

  LY 182
just get a set of valve stem seals.
on the valve you had to pinpunch out, check it hasn't cracked the guide

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
do I just look for cracks or is there any way to find out for sure?

if its cracked am I up the creek?

any idea on that 'bolt' and spring?

  LY 182
yeah i little pen light or similar is handy for this.
also check the new valve (oil the stem) slides freely in and out of said guide

if it is cracked you still arent nesseceraly knackered valve guides just punch out but sourcing them could be tricky.

i'll be honest i've not stripped one down in a while, fcuked if i can remember that part

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
cool :D

can you remember off-hand if they were expensive from reno or not?

how do i punch it out? big hammer? up or down?

  2005 Nissan Navara
dont hammer it out, unless your confident, they can stick on the ally if your not careful.

if in doubt take it to a machine shop, and they will press it out and the new on in with ease.

The thing you labelled the collet, is the spring cap. The collet is the two little half cone shaped bits that go in the recess at the top of the valve and sit insue that spring cap. You'll see what I mean if you look at the top of the other valves!

Guide will more than likely be fine, its not a hard metal so wont really crack.

You can buy 1 new stem seal.

Your retainer is damaged and you will obviously need a new spring.

The collets are the 2 small half conical that lock the valve into the retainer.

word on the street has it it's for the vvt plunger

vvtplunger.jpg

so my parts list for renault tomorrow are:

new inlet valve
new valve guide (or valve seat?)
new valve stem seal
new retainer
new collet(s)

and possibly another one of them vvt plunger bolt things, as i seem to only have 1!

the reno parts man is gonna love me tomorrow ;)

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
also, do i need any new seals for the camshafts for when i refit those?

and the cam cover gasket...

VVT plunger goes in hole to the far right of that pic, and there is only 1 of them. Those 2 holes are not blocked up.

And i've never taken one apart so i wouldnt know the internals! If it is, you'll need another one of those too.

Doubt you will need a new guide unless its ovalled, but that valve isnt too bent to cause that much damage.

Most probably wont need new collets either.

By a complete headset for £90, it'll probably work out cheaper than all the parts bit by bit.

I've probably got loads of spare retainers and springs.
