Removing numberplate stuck on with something very sticky

  Looking for 182
Hello,

I've ordered a 3/4 plate for my 182 so I checked my existing plate to make sure it was simply screwed in, but it's not. It seems to be stuck on VERY well. I yanked at it quite hard but it wouldn't budge.

I could give it a little more, but I'm worried about causing serious damage to the car, or myself! :rasp:

What is the best method for removing a numberplate which is stuck on with SERIOUSLY sticky double sided tape (of some sort!)?

THANKS :)

Heat with a hairdrier? It could ruin the plate though, I can imagine the reflective backing coming away from the acrylic.

Get a picece of fishing line or similar and get it behind the plate and 'saw' through it.

Clean it all up with white spirit andbobs your monkhouse.

(Failing that, bea man and pull harder?? ;))

If you soak some solvent like white spirit into a rag and squeegee some down the back of the plate and leave for a bit then then that should soften the adhesive.

I tried yanking it off last night and it definitely isn't budging. Will give it a go with some Tar remover tonight.

Assuming it's not screwed on it can only be - sticky pads, double-sided tape or glue.

Sticky pads - there'll be a gap behind the plate, as said use fishing line or the like to cut through the foam and remove the plate. Then heat remainder to soften adhesive.

Double-sided tape - heat and should come away.

Glue - no idea, depends on type of glue, be really careful you don't damage the paint. Good luck.

Wasnt there some guy on here who'd superglued his plate on?! God knows why. Good luck with getting it off without paint damage if someones been equally as stupid in this case :(

I'm fairly certain it is double sided sticky pads, as they overlap the edge of the bumper so I can feel them on the back of the numberplate.

I just sprayed some AG Tar Remover down the back, so will let that work it's magic for the rest of the working day. Then I'll heat the ******* up later on tonight! I've yanked on it damn hard though and it is not coming away at all! :(

Id use the hairdryer method and sit there for 10 mins or so..then use a credit card to get the plate off followed by a quick wash and clay.

Hairdryer worked much better than I thought. Took about 5 mins, but with some gentle yanking it came off fairly easily :)

Sorry if these are a bit big, I uploaded them directly from my phone.
