Removing Superglue

i superglued the petrol flap back onto the touran when the mrs broke it, but unfortunately some of the glue dripped down onto the paint and has set like a motherfcuker.

I know that the paint will be damaged, but whats the best was to minimize the damage?

Some sort of glue and tar remover. Autosmart Tardis if you have any.

Try paint thinners mate. Audi A5 had some Lead Paint ( Yes not the same stuff) but christ it's strong stuff. Put thinners on it left for about a minute it just wiped off.

I've never used it on bodywork, so i'm not going to suggest it.

However, if you do i'd test it on an inconspicuous area first.

I'd be looking at Tardis and IronX initially. If that doesn't shift it and you're a confident detailer, the next step would be wet sanding with >2000 with a block to ensure you're sanding with a flat face/surface to minimise surrounding damage, followed up by a finishing polish like Menz 85.

I'm not surprised iron x didn't touch it. I would try some tar remover. I'm not sure if thinners on the body work would be a good idea but I don't know, I wouldn't risk it myself.

I might consider trying to heat the glue a little bit with a hair-drier and using floss to try and get under it.

Either way I would probably expect a little bit of damage unfortunately. I reckon you'll be lucky if there is nothing.

No I'm not sure that it would but would always be my first port of call (not too aggressive and chemical cleaner that's safe on paintwork). Next step is a more harsh attack unfortunately, but without knowing your detailing background, Clart, I'd be concerned to suggested anything further.

Heat is unlikely to affect it as most "superglues" are thermically bonding substances, are they not?

Acetone is what is normally used to remove super glue. No idea what it does to clear coat though!

i'd say wet sanding is the only way you'll remove it mate,after all its called super glue for a reason!

you need to sand only the glue until its wafer thin then it might start to break away or pick off,very difficult...hope you get it sorted

It's not going to pick away without taking clearcoat with it, Scottie, unfortunately.

i guess tardis would be the next cheapest step, but im not too hopeful.

Neither am I mate, I'm afraid. But it is rectifiable. If it was mine, having tried the above, wet sanding and DA/rotary follow up would be my move.

I'm not afraid to do a bit of wet sanding if needed, but only as a last resort.

Not sure what the paint thinner was we used but I was reluctant to use it but my detailing guy said you would be surprised how tough car paint is. The thinner was left over from spraying my Clio.

2K paints (lacquers and such) once fully cured are a solvent barrier......unless you bath it in it for days, it should be ok. However be very careful you dont have any stone chips in the area you do put it on, as its possible it could get under it, and crinkle the edges or something similar.

Used to de badge Mercedes with white spirit, the badges used to leave a sticking foam on the paintwork, never damaged the paint.

Acetone will dissolve superglue and as far as I know unless you are a mong with it it should be paint safe.
