renault clip software

Hi all!

Does anybody know anything about the renault clip software? Does it require specific hardware to work, or just a serial obd-2 port connector like the scantool or similar?

Cheers,

Scott.

You cna run it on any suitable spec laptop but it takes a while to setup.

The cable to connect the laptop (with the relent software) to the Renault connection is the expensive bit unless youve got £2.6k forget it. Its not just a cable its a big box about 1/2 way along it.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I expected the software to run on any laptop, but I was wondering about the cable. So is the cable not a normal OBD-2 to serial convert (using, say, the ELM, Motorola or MAXIM chip?)

Cheers,

Scott.

Hi,

The Clip connects to the lapton via USB, then another USB lead from the Clip to a little box called a CAN. Dont know what CAN means but its something to do with the Renault computers are different language then normal PCs / laptops. From the CAN is the normal 16 pin EOBD connector.

Dont know what car u got, but if its old enough (big diagnostic socket, like MK1 Clios) try and get hold of an XR25. This was the old computer hardware before the Clip. Its a lot more simpliar, no laptop required etc. I dont think the main dealers use these anymore (i work for a Renault specialist and we still use it, aswell as the Clip) so some should be around somewhere.

Hope this helps mate, but your gonna need some money...

this is good bit of kit, but should come with a little folder of paper. Basically this machine only illuminates bar graphs (20 in total). you then have to look in the folder and it shows u what it means. (the meanings change depending on what computer its connected to ie, inj, auto, abs, etc.

The last pod they done for this was 18, so this one with pod 12 is prob quite old.

Oh sorry, just seen that ltlle folder in the pic, not a bad buy really, as long as the pods late enough for ur car

Thats not what I want. I need to know whether the clip connects via a standard OBD2 to serial (or usb) converter. It seems that nobody really knows what the hardware is. The only reason that I ask is that I dont want to waste my money on buying the clip software if I cant use it with my ODB-2 cable!

The CAN you mentioned... is that the CAN bus standard, as opposed to ISO OBD-2?

PS: Im thinking of integrating this kind of thing into a car pc, and its for a 2002 model Clio Sport.

Hi,
i bought the software myself before i knew enough (??) about it. I have tried and install it on several machines only to get instant aborted installation due to "not a valid clip platform" - afterhand i was told that it only works on some laptop models (true or not i do not know..) but i assume its required to have the clip interface (electronics hardware) installed before it will accept any software installation.

Regarding the CAN adapter i assume it is to handle the CAN bus protocol required on some vehicles - others again run on KWT 2000 standards and requires no CAN support on engine diagnostics alone.

However the Clip equippment is as you know a case with a laptop mounted inside - underneath the laptop (case bottom) is all nessesary electronics required to operate the Clip located. Therefore the Clip software alone will not work with any standard OBD connector as it is much more complex and Renault spesific than any normal engine diagnostic tools available on the market.

I point out that i do not own a Clip myself (but i am searching for a nice used package, some on hand) - i do however own the XR25 with cassette No 18, but it will not match the possibilities thats within a Clip tool box. Then again the Clip will not handle all features available on the XR25 such as for instance calibrating the active suspension system on e.g. the Safrane.
