Renault F1 Tech Centre visit.

  PH1 V6
Fascinating day today down at the Renault F1 tech centre.

Not too sure how many pics will turn up as it was howling down so can't see many coming from the cars outside!

2005 championship winning car in reception area alongside one of last years cars....24 people crawling over 2 cars isn't likely to produce too many good pics either....obviously no pics of anything inside allowed.

The plan was that if the weather was fine the 2005 car would have been wheeled out and each V6 ( 20 in total ) would have a pic parked alongside it.

For me the best part was where the cars were assembled, think of operating theatre clean and you won't be far out. The current cars are on their way to China but they had 3 older ones in there undergoing various bits of work....the guide stopped by one where the front brakes were in the process of being worked on, he said the weight of their current cars front brake disc is 1kg and takes 6 months to make!

All the carbon fibre stuff is made in a hermetically sealed room where those who work in there are dressed similar to surgeons.

The area where the exhaust manifolds are made is quite small. All made by hand and to within 0.10mm tolerance, the welds were unbelievably neat and the average cost for a pair is £100,000.

They're heavily into 3D printing and we were told that in the not too distant future the majority of the car will be made through 3D printing.

Some other interesting stuff also shown but for obvious reasons no development stuff. The complete car is made from scratch at Enstone apart from the engine which is made in France and the annual budget for the F1 team is £300,000,000!

They seem to be opening up a fair few visits recently, it’s really good there isn’t it? Sounds like you had the same tour as I did back in September.

It’s amazing there, so much attention to detail and the engineering going into the cars are incredible.
