Renaultsport built to self destruct after 3 years????

  X-172 Cup
January was the end of the 3 year warranty...2 weeks later I needed a new back box (I know it wasn't covered under warranty but allow me to continue/rant)...and yesterday I found out I need a new door solenoid (drivers side) becasue the RCL won't lock my foogin door  + during the service I had done recently the calipers were binding and have all but sh*gged the b*stard discs...  fortunately the kind folks @ Blackhurst & Sons refurbed the calipers (see separate thread:http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=127701) and so the discs are OK in the short term...

So far this year then...
Back Box (OE) £180 fitted
Service + additional work on calipers £200+
New door solinoid £150 - if they can do it in an hour...

so that's well over £500 on a car that's been properly maintained from new, done just over 20,000 miles and is just over 3 years old...is it me or do Renault build their cars to last the duration of the warranty or am I just being a bit pissed off and cynical??? - wouldn't happen in a VW/Audi/Honda that's all I know...

...that's it rant over - the bloody cars got me over a barrel 'cos theres nothing out there that will drive like it, so as long as it keeps putting a smile on my face (which it dutifully does on a daily basis) I guess I'll keep putting my hands in my pocket...the money I spend though is supposed to be for track days so it looks like thats something off the agenda for the near future :dapprove: - god knows how much extra funds/maintenance would be required if I did a day @ Oulton (shivers)

Does anyone else find the RS's a bit 'high maintenance' or is it a Renault thing...in which case why am I on my 7th one?? :S

TAXI! (runs away)

It does sound that way but if you bear in mind renault cover the warranty for 3 years of X amount of miles! I'd imagine that mileage to be over 20k as that doesn't seem many miles for that to go wrong.

Probably bad luck and sods law as well mate!! Hopefully nothing else will go wrong. :)

LOL I think you could be right!!

Just before Christmas I had a pulley/pump thing go in the engine
My backbox fell off in February.
My off-side driveshaft has now broken and my bonnet release catch broke so the bonnet was stuck fast!!

What with that and replacement foglight and windscreen I'm well on the way to spending £1500 in the last 4-5 months!!!! :(

Thats why they made the extended warently.
Mines now covered till 90k and another 18 month.
You can have extended for upto 120k and 5 years.

Only costs £600 and I've only another £450 worth of stuff to break before I'm quids in. Plus breakdown cover is included.

Back boxes are fomous for failing the service is normal running costs.
I'd say you've only paid about £200 for extra running costs realy.
You could have got the part from Matt cheaper and fitted it yourself it yourself if you felt keen.

Brakes you can do yourself 1.5hrs at tops including disks.
Disk new are £55 for a pair and pads £40 for Renault original.

yes, I am the only owner.

wowzers, good to know that they built some good ones, mine was either a Friday afternoon build (on a Bank Holiday weekend lol) or maybe the previous owners gave it a hard time...

  Audi RS4
my warranty ran out on the A2 in november,so far had to fork out for a new throttle body-£503.85,new AC condensor-£85.00(not done by Audi, would have been £300+ otherwise)and one wheel refurb-£52.
So it's not just Renaults mate.
My 172 hardly ever caused me grief! lol.

  Audi RS4
It was only 2 years old when it had to go back to Audi because the drivers door had dropped!!!
I certainly wasn't expecting that from a krautmobile.
so far it's had the cd replaced under warranty due to it skipping every time I went over a pebble, boot seals replaced due to leaking and 3 yes 3 coil packs under warranty!
Hopefully that will be it now!
The best thing is when I get a courtesy car from the garage though, they always give us an A3.

Hi Pottermouse. Stoke Newbie online. Just sold scoob to purchase cup which will pick up on Sunday. Sympathies with your costs, but having spent 4000 on maintenance for scoob in 40months I'm hoping my renault will be much cheaper to run and equally grin inducing. Where do you live? Im in Fulford and work in Trentham. Keep your eyes out. Will soon be on pp J444 BAD. Regards Jonathan.

I must admit, I'll definitely be thinking about changing the 182 when the warranty runs out, I'm highly suspicious of it!

My CD is skipping as well grrrrrrrrrr.

Fingers crossed, I have had my Ph1 172 for 2 years now and nothing has broken. Finally had to have a new battery as it was struggling to start. Other than than the renault build quality is fine!!!!

I'm just having a moan that's all, :dead: don't want to make other owners on here paranoid and as you can see from the other posts some of them are sound...I live in Chester now but get to the game now & again - Middo is another Clio owner who lives in Stoke, welcome aboard ;)

First mistake is taking your car back to a main dealer, Why?? Use a Renault specialist non main dealer, will be half the price. For a backbox and a door solenoid you'd prolly be looking at 300 quid topside.

the extended warranty to 5 years..

does this cover everything that the normal warranty covers?!
Yep its better than the 3rd year normal warently realy.
It doesn't cover wear and tear but neither does the standard one and if the clutch fails at 60k I'd not pay t as it not a wear and tear item IMO at that milage.

is it £600 for all models or more for 182's cos they have so much fricking things going wrong with them?

i was thinking of selling my car before the warranty runs out.. but this extended warranty sounds interesting!

It goes on engine catagory nd there a few different options
Somehting like
4yrs 30k
5yrs 30k
4yrs 60k
5yrs 60k
4yrs 90k
5yrs 90k
4 yrs 120k
5 years 120k

Best ask your dealeship for details I cannot fine the form off hand I've posted it before on the forum if you want to search.

  182 + Cup
When SEAT offered me an extended warranty on my Leon Cupra they wanted silly money (£900 was their first figure) so I said no thanks. Then within weeks the water pump failed and cost me over 350 beer tokens! (mostly labour - pump was cheap)

Shortly after that I part exchanged it for my 182. Not the most informed of decisions I admit, but I do love the 182 when it's working properly.

Point to note though, SEAT service was MUCH better than Renault so I didn't mind the dealer prices so much.

Agree

I know someone who had a Golf TDI (only a year old) and it was in and out of the garage having parts replaced etc. more than any Renault I've owned.
