replace engine mounts?

  b/g 182, meg tourer
my car is on the standard mounts and the car is on 54,000 miles. would it be wise to replace the engine mounts while im getting an exhaust leak fixed and a new cat to mani fixing kit fitted? or am i just throwing money away.
noticed more vibration through the clutch pedal, so i thought this could be a sign of mount failure. i have undone the bolts on the mount and pulled the engine forwards to try to solve the vibration and it worked for a month or so but it has worked its way back now.
if i order new engine mounts which one (s) do i need? upper gearbox? lower gearbox? upper engine?
thanks.

thats what i was thinking, or just replacing standard for standard. not sure how much noise and vibration comes through the uprated ones.
plus, are my mounts due for a change?

is this a garage job? suppose you might save a tiny bit having the mounts done at the same time as the car needs lifting to look at some of them - the cat's not in the way or anything though, so not automatically wise to consider them at the same time

guess it depends upon how the car's been driven but think you're likely to feel a big difference if you polybush the d/bone and renew the other three (top engine, upper gearbox, lower gearbox support). probably looking at £120-150 for the parts; may be couple of hours for a mechanic to fit

it's worth checking the lower nut on the bolt/spindle that goes through the upper g/box mount first though, as it may be loose and that would cause probs (info on search)

yeah its a garage job, well... a friend of mine works at jabbasport so they do all of the work on my car. i realise the cat is not in the way but it may be leaking due to worn mounts? so i thought rather than replacing the cat/mani fixing kit then finding out i need engine mounts, i considered doing it all at once so i dont need 2 cat fixing kits due to engine movement destroying it if that makes sence.
works out £154 for poly d/bone, and 3 standard mounts. its just a lot of money to throw at it if im not sure it needs it. was wondering if there is more ways of telling.

i will check the nut on the upper box mount, cheers for that.

i'm sure the OEM ones need changing quite regularly , mine were changed twice in 70K.

Makes the car drive like new ; less play in engine , better response , etc etc.

I'm (for now) sticking with OEM, but i'm tempted to trie the K-tec ones if the OEM ones are going to wear on me quickly. Because they cost too much to change so much..

so which mounts did you replace franx? the upper and lower engine mounts only or the gearbox mounts aswell?

you could easily change them DIY. upper engine is a doddle, upper gearbox is easy bar stipping the battery/airbox etc and the lower gearbox is probably ok. dogbone one would be handier on ramps but easily doable on the driveway

I did them all round. And we did it ourselves but had a ramp to our disposal. The two upper ones and dogbone were easy, i found the lower gearboxmount the difficult one. Also this one is a rubber-bit the engine "leans" on when tilting. I will leave that one alone next time round because the wear + tear on this is def. not as bad as the others

think if you remove the upper gearbox mount, remove the nut from the lower gearbox mount and jack the engine up a bit it might come free. you could always drop the subframe a bit or worst case remove the whole bracket holding the lower mount on. two easy bolts, two not so easy ones.

You don't need to dorp the subfrrame for the lower gearbox mount. Just do it when the upper gearbox one is off/undone and jack the gearbox up a bit.

But as others have said I don't think this one takes the same strain as the others. Mine looked fine after 130k.

its not really fitting that is the problem. its more the fact of spending £150 or so on new mounts all round if they are not needed. and which ones to replace. and wether to go for k-tec uprated or standard ones.
cheers for all the help tho guys.

how many miles have you got on yours !? I tried to explain my situation that the mounts on mine needed changing TWICE in 70K

So when you have around 40k on her or even more, just change them ! transforms your car

do the dogbone and the two top ones. Why not try the Ktec ones ? They seem to me to be a good improvement because they do'nt budge , meaning no wearing ! They do seem to send vibrations through the chassis making the ride more noisy/uncomfortable, more sporty though

**EDIT** just read you have got 50K on the car. Go ahead and change them

I saw two guys having the k-tec uprated ones fitted (plus the dogbone poly thing) and they both were happy with the result. the downside to this is some extra vibration in the car at idle speeds, but hey, I don't care since I have the k-tec ones waiting to be fitted :D. go for the dog bone poly bush aswell, 210 quid all of them, I think that's a better deal than replacing stock mounts every 40k or even less

thanks ripp, searched on here for opinions/reviews on the k-tec mounts and read about the extra vibration and cabin noise, it doesn't sound too drastic so i think this is what i will be going for. heard mixed reviews on the poly dogbone tho, so not sure if i will go for a standard one or not.
