replacement filter 172

hi am lookin at replacing my standard filter for a aftermarket but dont no whickh 2 go for.there are two i bin thinkin of gettin which are the k&n(£40) or the itg sponge filter(£47). which filter would you go for?

I replaced my PiperX with an ITG filter a few weeks back. Its a good quality filter. They come highly recommended.

ITG. I got mine for £36 plus P and P from motorsportworld.

It replaced a piperX filter that needed cleaning, but the rubber seals had started to come away from the filter so I needed a new one.

the standard air feed on the 172 is good so a replacement panel filter would be as good as an IK performance wise. If you want nice induction noise I can reccomend pipercross open induction. Sounds lush.

People have mentioned removing the air feed pipe from the standard air box have leaving a 1" gap between the pipe and the airbox.

Apparently this improves air intake and makes a nice noise.

Anyone done this? I tried pulling the pipe, but it seems to be attached somehow.

so why do people spend 250 plus on a viper when a pa nel at 40-50 does the same performance wise..surely not!!!

Youll notice that a lot of the people that bought vipers are actualy saying theyre not worth 250 for the gain etc

the plastic feed pipe enters the std airbox just in front of the battery, its about 3" diameter, you have to waggle the pipe up and down WHILST pulling away from the airbox, it will give after about 20 secs or so. It goes about 1" inside the airbox and kinda clips in place with 2 little bulges on the outer part of the plastic end which make the pipe slightly wider than the hole it fits in (youll see when youve removed it) you can leave the pipe unplugged, to replace it takes 5 secs - simple.

The increase in induction roar above 4k is incredible especially when its free, mine seems to pickup quicker as well, it will not suck in hot air either cos the area in front of the battery is shielded, i went for a 30 mins thrash and popped the bonnet and that area was cool

do you combin this with a panel filter then? i still cant believe that a panel filter will give the same gains compared to viper..if so made a terrible mistake!!!

I dont think the gains are as much as the viper, but what people are saying is that are the gains really worth 250quid?

yeh, i agree - dont think that panel filter will give you the same increase in mid range like the sealed kits do (ie bmc cda & viper) but thing to take into account is that a lot of viper owners are still using the restrictive rubber inlet pipe that connects the viper to the engine side, the std pipe is ribbed and reduces from 70mm to 63mm so its a potential bottleneck in terms of airflow between the viper and engine, to me it seems kinda strange to spend £250 and still use the std pipe, the hillpower pipe is 70mm end to end and smooth internally to flow better, it costs £50ish, thats a whopping £300 inc viper

The ITG panel filter and hillpower silicon pipe cost about £90, add a good 3" cold air feed for £10 down to front grille, unplug original feed to airbox and your gonna get much better induction noise and crisper throttle all for £100 im also thinking of covering bottom part of airbox in several layers of kitchen foil to shield from engine heat, just cant see where the £250 comes from with the vipers

it should be a good compromise, the £200 i save from not getting viper pays for 80% of my planned zorst as well, £360 all in - what a bargain and car still looks 100% std from the outside.
