Replacing standard head unit (182)

If i replace the cd player will i still get info on the dash display or is that part gonna be redundant?

If i keep the standard head unit, are there options to improve its bite - amp outs, i-pod ins etc?

Im assuming its just basic with little room for improving/adding to....

Depending on what head unit you get....Alpine allows you to retain display and stalk with adapter leads.

aparently there is no Pre-Out....so u need an amp with a high level input to accept the feed from the speaker output of the head unit...

I have an Alpine headunit but with a basic InCarTec adaptor for the display - it only shows volume up/down and track forwards/backwards and "ALPINE" at all other times - nothing else.

I think if you want radio station information, current track and time elapsed; you need Alpines own headunit -> display adapter which costs a total of £60 for both parts.

Worth it? I certainly dont think so. Youre going to be watching the road, not the display ;). Besides, Alpine HUs tell you pretty much what you need to know from the headunit.

What if i start from the other end and upgrade the speakers?

Will that make any substantial difference, size will be remaining the same?

Who makes the speakers in it already anyway? are they the same as the head?

Couldnt tell you who makes the Std ones, but upgrading to aftermarket Components in the front and replace the rear ones with better quality 2-ways will make the std head unit sounds loads better. The you can upgrade the HU to something like the alpine or sony that retain the dash display and stalk controls.

Maybe you should also consider a small powered sub, just an 8 or 10" effort to give your car a fuller sound. It doesnt need to be barry boy loud, and would be a worthy addition.

Thanks for all the advice...

Think ill follow Blinks suggestions - LOL @ the barry boy bit - wouldn.t want it that loud; theres enough rattles already.

The HU upgrade is the way to go.

Speak to Tom, hes done the HU upgrade in his 172 and now his 182, each time the difference was more noticable than upgrading the speakers alone.
