Resistor pack

Hi guys, i have a 172 and need to replace the resistor pack.
Can anyone give us a quick step by step guide to the location and replacement of it.

Thanks in advance;)

Its under the scuttle panel you won't miss it. About the middel of the scuttle panel more to the drivers side.

It is possible that cleaning it up with a sharp implement and some emery boards will get it working again. I have managed that on a couple of 172s.

Fred is right, its probably had a bath and that is almost certainly down to the fact the plastic water guide at the bottom of the windscreen is not fitted correctly or the drain hole is blocked with muck and dead leaves.

Might be a stupid question... but surely they would have put it somewhere where it won't get wet?

Feckin French engineers :p

By the way, you have to click on the link, wait for the diagram to appear and then press refresh on your browser to make the numbers clear.

I thought it was part 6 as when i removed it i bridged the two end connectors on the 5 pin plug which goes into it and the fan came on full speed! It also has a large heatsink which made me think it was a resistor.

Stupid question, but where's the scuttle panel? Is it the plastic covered area under the windscreen and where the pollen filter is?

Thats it Rob, The panel you want is on the offside, It lifts from the front. You dont need any tools to get it off, but be careful with the little clip at the bottom of the A pillar.

Note where the white plastic water guide is, and make sure that goes back in its grooves or the water from the screen will run down into your blower motor housing and muck up your repair.....

My problem is that when I first get in the car and drive it the fan works - however when I stop get back in after about 5 mins it stops working - then comes back on again about 15mins later. It seems to be getting worse.

I had a quick look under the panel and cleaned the contacts up but no luck.

I cant seem to find the resistor pack

Where is it located on my pics?

What is the part no and how much is it around?

Thanks

Its the bit at the back of the first picture with the red yellow green wires.

I am sure it is the cause. EDDOO seems to have solved his by repairing/replacing his.

Unplug the unit and find the wire that is live, then short it over to any of the others, the fan should go flat out.

Good idea - So short out the 2 x black wire connectors? Or connect the live one to one of the coloured wire connectors?

I Think Its The Two Outside Ones, You Cant Do Any Harm As There Is No Earth Connection There As Such Just The Feed And Outputs.

Hi, As Brian said, short out the end two wires (both black) on the multi plug and the fan should run at full speed.

What did you use to short it out - some decent electrical wire?

What was the part no of the resistor pack and how much do they cost?

Cheers

I used a short piece of wire, hardly sophisticated, but it worked.
I dont know the cost or the part number as I managed to fix both the cars I have worked on, sorry.

How did you fix them?

I had a look and there was water in the lip around the edge but the connections seemed good.

Did you open up the connector?

No, I just cleaned up all the internal strips with a sharp blade, small wire brush and a Emery board I stole from my "Her-in-doors" then sprayed contact cleaner on the terminals.

The pack brian is talking about is not the same as is on your car. If you prise open the 4 clips to reveal the gubbins you will see on your unit that the circuits are covered in silicone gel and even when this is removed it is all fine circuitry with no means of repair.. The part from renault will set you back £103, i managed to find a second hand one for £40.

Ah! that would explain the confusion about the part on the diagram. What year build is your car EDD ?

Chris, have PM'd you on this ;)

EDD - what a bloody rip off for what is in reality some resistors!

How did yours stop working - was it intermittent like mine or just stop working completely.

Did you have a part No for it?

:)
