Retrieving deleted photos

Is there anyway to retrieve photos once they are deleted from a memory card? The reason I ask is that my mum deleted about 70 photos by accident from her camera (crap delete system and can be done easily) but as soon as it was done the memory card (SD memory card) was removed and hasn't had anything added/ removed since. After a quick browse on the net it seems that it is possible to retrieve the photos, but most things require you to buy a special program.

Is there any way of doing this either without having to buy any new programs or using a free program of some sort?

you can use ontrack recovery i have recovered items from MMC cards before so long as its fat32 or fat16 file system
