Retro-Fitting ABS

Had a taste today of what ABS (or lack of) could do for me in certain situations (see other forum!), so Im curious if its possible to take the ABS system from a dead valver/williams and fit it to my non-ABS Williams 2.

Dont have a clue how it works so I dont know what would be involved in fitting it! Excuse my ignorance....

any help?

pretty hard mate but possible
Probably selling up next month then

Seems sad to buy a performance car and worry about safety, but todays experience REALLY shook me up

I used to have it on my old rover, it was rubbish very intrusive and annoying.

ABS shouldnt be something that you have to rely on ever. I have had it on a few cars I have had over time but never had it come on with any of them. Learn to not panic and feel the car!

I used to lock up my car on purpose and then unlock it. Play around when it is safe to do so and learn how to control your car better than most!

Hope that doesnt seem belittling to you! Just my two-pence worth!

Agree in most with above but there WILL be a situation at some point where ABS would have saved you - no questions about that.

The question is will that point happen to you or some other poor git...

And I would have thought it wouldnt be that hard to convert?

Scrappies for the wheel sensors and control box? ecu upgrade to know its there - only problem I can see is if there isnt any mounts on the older clios to attatch the sensors too.... (my 2p worth :D)

ABS is sh*te unless u know how to use it most people dont !

it is not possible to fit it to a car after the car has rolled of the production line according to renno !

I wouldnt worry about ABS mate, i dont think it works that effective on my williams - it ok but its a bit snappy as i found out in the snow recently, i still think u get better feel and responce from normal brakes!

Definately some good advice there, but without sounding ungrateful its nothing Ive not heard before!! I have even tried messing around on safe bits of road recently with locking up the wheels etc albeit at low speed

My problem came when faced with a real life situation, everything Ive been taught and tried for myself went out of the window for some reason and I slipped into panic mode!!

Last time I checked... to use ABS properly you pushed your foot on the brake pedal as hard as you can.. its not rocket science is it?

Well Renno are wrong then, apart from the fact there will be aftermarket options you can always do a scrappie job as mentioned already.

I think you will find that braking in general in snow isnt a great idea, its more about speed and selecting the correct gear. However I do agree that you can probably slow down quicker in snow without abs.

However if you are doing less than 6mph, which you really should be if its heavy/icey snow then the ABS doesnt kick in.

Heh, everyone told me ABS is pointless, so Im not too bothered now looking for a car with it.

aggreed abs doesnt help in snow.drove the girlfriends clio in the snow last week and the abs makes it virtually impossible to use the brakes.found the cup a lot easier to slow down than hers in the snow.abs will always brake better in good conditions though.
