rev limiter

  astra coupe 2.2

i am sure someone can give me an answer to a stupid question,,,,, but what is a rev limiter and what does it do??? it kicks in a a certain rev range but if your rev counter, like mine is, intermittent, and only works when it wants to how can i tell when i kicks in????

a rev limiter is what the does what the tin says. It limits engine speed when you get too high to prevent damage from overspeeding the crank which can result in all sorts of minor damage from clipped pistons to mashed internals.

On older cars it was limited by the spark being cut off at a certain rpm level.

Modern cars use a fuel cutoff and the ECU switches the injecotrs off till the engine drops to an acceptable rpm level. It doesnt use sparks cutoff as nea fuel will damage the cat.

It kicks in around 6800rpm on you engine and it feels like you hit a brick wall.....and it sounds like BWAP BWAP BWAP BWAP BWAP.

thanks. troub is i can rev the nuts off my engine and still havent met this brickwall scenario yet!! ergh!!! and to the best of my knowledge it hasnt been chipped! hmmmmmmmmm its a weird one cos when the rev counter does decide to work i can get to the 7s in 2nd gear and it seems like it can keep going...... this is when i get the fear and change to 3rd!! yeeeeek

Your williams limiter shoud kick in at about 6500rpm, dont go taking it much above this cos the engine wasnt designed to rev so high and your probably gonna do some damage!!

Also u should be able to use your oil pressure gauge as a good indicator of wen to change gear if your taco aint working all the time ;)

the rev counter info is sent form the ignition pack to pin 8, and speed info comes from the CAS and computer.

You can check any one of them to see which is bust.

The Hill power chip takes it straight up to 7.5k, I dont rev this high as it sounds like its really screaming, will this reduce the life of the engine?

v.high revs do cause a bit more wear but the main prob is more chance of something breaking. just make sure you got good quality oil and spark plugs and change em more regulary and it shoould be fine.

6.5k on willy

go flat out in forth to 100mph then wait for the feeling of your wheels fallin off!

Thats the limiter!

re: the rev counter, i have had it checked out by reno and they wanted £900 for a new counter, boards and all that..... grrr!.

this i a question then to BenR or anyone else who can help .. if there is a sensor from the ignition pack to pin 8, where is it located and how do i check it for damage/connection faults???

Thanks!!

the wire from the ignition pack goes straight to you instrument panel,no sensors but through at least two block connectors.the coil pack sends a pulse to the instrument panel.you could get a multimeter and do a continuity/resistance check on the wire between the coil pack and the instrument panel to check the condition of the wiring.
