Funny you should say that as it happened in my old Clio and it was the carpet! Naturally it was the first thing i checked this time so it's not that...
Can't say i've noticed a problem when idle, as it's always felt hesitant.
Could be the throttle body is dirty (thats the best hope). Otherwsie could be a sensor acting up or expensive a new throttle body there useless the Phase 2 ones.
throttle control valve? hit mine sorry "tapped" mine with a hammer and it controlled it and brought it back down, took it all off and cleaned out all the carbon crap, along with dirt in the throttle body and shes been fine since, jus use brake cleaner or something (if it turns out this is the problem! if not ignore my post ........)
When this was happening with my valver it was a buggered throttle cable, i was coming off the throttle then dropping the clutch but the cable was sticking which was causing the revs to stick longer
