revs on a 172

4500rpm is about 40mph in 2nd and 60mph in 3rd (I checked on the way home last night) so even if the legal side of things worries you, you can lawfully take it close to the limiter in 2nd on a NSL and still be ok, just watch out for a bit of torque steer and have fun. Dont worry about fuel consumption (what are you getting by the way?), I get 35-37 out of my Cup and see the green gear light fairly often.

The harder you push it the better the car will get over time, if youve had it from new and never hit 5000rpm chances are its a very sluggish Renaultsport.

Mine gets raped in every gear very often and at 12k miles its now getting very loose.

My overtaking gears are 2nd between 40 and 60mph, 3rd between 60 and 80, 4th for 80-110, 5th for 110 to 130+. It will rev higher in each of those gears, buy those are my basic gear speeds.

I quite enjoy leaving motorway slip roads at 80-90 and going straight to the outside lane (if safe) and passing a few folk then slow to 80 and sit in inside lane :D

as said earlier, drop it to 3rd for a real laugh when your going to overtake, even if 4th would suffice, 3rd is amusing!

lol. I had fun today, should really let the car warm up, but what the hell, I love the noise you get when doing 70 in 2nd. And my neighbours all give disapproving looks.

I guess in that case the MK1 172 must be able to get to 70 in 2nd becuase the 172 and 182 I have owned only just get to 60 in 2nd

my 182 sees high 60s in 2nd, not quite 70 - well in fact it does see 70 in 2nd on a cool day, its awful hot these days.

this has to be a windup?

i just got mycar, im 17 in 2 weeks, and iv been driving it round empty car parks with my dad and have pushed it up to 5500 in first gear, floored. this guy must be taking the piss!

yup the VVT is working from about 1500rpm IIRC, VVT is pretty pointless on the engine and doesnt do alot, the 5k surge is the engine coming "on cam"

Not taking the piss, I have been pushing this so hard over the last day, after a warm up. I hit 70 on the speedo in second. I have not seen the gear change light. I need a track day or something to really test this out.

Misunderstanding here. I have had the 172 3 days now, its just coming up to two years old.

if you still didnt try to floor it then uve missed alot mate. its fun to go until the light indicator appears. floor it maaan feel the speed and hear the engine roaring.

If you drove to 70 in 2nd gear the green light would of come on and you would of probably revved past the green light.

Piss take me thinks

not being funny but if youre for real, then maybe you should think about getting another car as you clearly dont have much idea about cars, particularly performance (well, pretty quick) cars

and you shouldnt be doing 70 past your neighbours either!

Drive it how you like mate, I drive mine hard when I feel like it but not all the time. I personally dont want to rag mine all the time but I do like to get the most out of it

Never had my car hit the limiter but have have taken it to the gear change light. Mix your driving so you drive nice and calm but boot it when you want youll get the most out of the drive, fun but relatively fuel efficient.

Having only had your licence 11 months its probably best to take it easy, I mean test the cars limits but not your driving limits. You can stay safe then, but still enjoy the car. :)
