ringing metallic noise from gearstick

When in 2nd and 4th gears i can hear a high frequency ringing. mainly on the over-run. If I hold the gear stick firmly the noise disappears.

Has been doing this for about a year, just realised I can stop the noise if i hold the stick.

Any ideas? Could the linkage be hitting the cat?

I'm kinda baffled...

Have heard this before, and turned out it was the cat on its way out.

Nope unfortunatly not.

had it looked at while being serviced: was the wire from sensor in cat rattling against the handbrake mechanism. all sorted, well happy!
