Roof extrator fan?

Hi,

Brought a clio 2003 Billabong yesterday for my first car, All working great and im happy.

But in the roof, where the reading lights, sunroof switch is etc there was a humming noise, irritating so i took it apart and found this extractor fan?
Took it apart and cleaned the mountains of dust out from it and it was fixed for a few seconds, then started creating noise again.

What i want to know is what is the fan for? Air con sensor or something?

And could i dissconnect it without too much trouble?

Thanks
