RS - Feel the Need

  BMW M4; S1000 RR
I'd say people would be right to kick off if ford were trying to hide it, not deal with the issue.

Maybe they treated Mark differently because he has a dash cam in his hand all the time but for him to take the car in on the first visit and they accept the car, book an engine delivery, schedule the work and arrange a hire car is a pretty good experience as things go IMO.

Of course it's not fixed yet so we shouldn't be congratulating Ford, but if it turns out to be fixed then I think they've dealt with it as best they could for the individual.

Different issue. Some porsches had engine problems. The porsche he was in, had a hitting a stationary object at speed, then turning into a s**t f**king inferno problem.

But don't worry. He was smiling. Apparently.
I thought his daughter got a big settlement from Porsche for some fault?

A good mate of mine is a tech in fords and has done 3 of these engines so far - one being for another close friend.

Having spoken to him the general rule is that for a car under 6 months old the procedure is 'man in a van' (as he referred to it) where they will basically pick and full engine off the production line and take it to the dealer and do a drop out, drop in swap which includes a brand new turbo, clutch, flywheel etc. For anything over the 6 months they will send a bare crate motor and swap the ancillaries over so no new turbo, clutch or anything.

The only time he's not had a bare motor after 6 months from build date was when one was leaking oil through the turbo, they couldn't guarantee the condition of the turbo so the powers that be authorised a full engine to mitigate any problems from a blown turbo on first start up with a new engine.

He said it's a pretty easy engine to get out and he can have one out and back in within the day, not sure on the book time of them but he can do it faster after doing a few.

Should have bought a Mustang with the non s**t engine

There's an FRS that lives near me, hadn't noticed it around for weeks... had been away for a new engine. Car hadn't even done 5k. f**k that noise.

This is a f**k up, made worse by the fact it’s their flagship.

But all cars have issues of varying sizes.

How many people on here have had the complete power steering failure on a Mini?

f**k knows how many rear tyres I had on my gold because of saw tooth wear.

197 and gearboxes?

And i’m sure a great many others.

What matters is that dealers sort them out. Which Ford seem to have a decent approach on.

Ford seems to be getting a bit of a bashing in here. I’ve never owned a ford but thought they were quite reliable. Is that not the case?

I’d be gutted with a new engine. I’d ask them to take the car back and I’d take my money elsewhere. Car would feel tarnished for me. Mainly because I’m weird with stuff like that

It's pretty valid.

You can take a TV back for a full refund it it has a design defect. You can reject a house if it's not built to code.

If I really liked the car I would be ok with the engine aslong as I could extend the warranty to lapse the manufacture when expires.

If it's a bit "meh" I would be gunning for a refund given its a well known issue now. It's pretty drastic tbh, I would be ok with diff or box, just means more free abuse.

Yeah because having it on the original engine with a well documented and terminal fault 2 to 3 years down the line when you want to sell, is way better than having a brand new engine?

This isn't original car smell, it's a car with a fault that come some years from now - people are going to be saying "don't these blow up, have you had it checked?". No it's minty mint and all original!

I guess it depends, like Ant has said, how much you love the car. These will still fetch some in the future so it's worth doing. If you fall out of love with it then fair enough, although pushing for a refund is stressful work in the car game.

Exactly this. The thought of demanding a replacement car never even occurred to me...give me a new engine that's fixed and I'll be happy.

If it fails, give me another one. And another. And another. They have to fix it eventually surely...and hopefully that'll happen before my 5yr/100k mile warranty runs out.

If, no, be positive, when they do, my eventual 75k miles 5x engine swapped RS will command good money versus a garage queen that's done only 2k on its original engine

My only comment would be that if it does go again I'd be requesting in writing a confirmation that warranty will be extended to the last date of which the engine was replaced!

Nah its a ford, your car will hold good money but a 5 yr old 2k car will have ford scene tax by then and be worth more to the anoraks.

If I do end up on this merry-go-round once again after this time then that's definitely something I'll be looking for. Before that though I don't think it's unreasonable to expect answers from Ford explaining the failure and what they've done to ensure the engine I've been given isn't also a dud.

Once I speak to the dealership again this week I will be putting that in writing to them.

Only 5% or so by your reckoning is whats affected isn't it.?
I could understand a 50% failure rate being an issue but 5% isn't that bad.
And I did chuckle at incontinent lol.

I'm saying that the failure rate is higher than that, potentially much higher.

The trouble is that unless the car goes through regular and full heat cycles, which the low mileage cars generally don't, it will never show the head distortion as it cools down.

Low mile cars may well appear to be fault free but buying one that's never been touched by Ford to then use as a daily would be a very very risky thing to do if it has no warranty in my opinion.

All the best RS Products needed an engine rebuild every fortnight anyway

I put YouTube on the tv last night and this video was one of the suggested videos. It said it had had 30,000 views!!!

Do you make money from your YouTube account lol.

Yeah, this one has gone slightly mental. Far more than I was expecting/hoping.

How much earned? Pennies really. Before this I earned £20-£30 a month (not even enough to cover the fuel I burn when I film LOL). This latest one though has pushed my earnings up to about £8 a day...so I've almost reached my goal of having the YT public finance a trackday each year and the trackday itself therefore becoming self-funding.

My next target is two trackdays a year ha ha.

I have a browser add on that helps me manage my YT activities and it shows me info you don't normally get to see...like keywords used on other videos (so you can pinch the most successful ones) and also what the earnings are.

Some of the bigger ones quite comfortably earn six figures per calendar month.

It's frightening really, especially given the crap some of them post 😂

How do you even go about setting up? Got any useful links? Would be interested to read them.

I've no idea, my 'channel' (I hate calling it that!) just sort of happened! In the beginning (my first upload was November 2006) all I ever wanted to do was share track exploits. Then when I had my ST I started thinking about things I personally would like to watch/see...like how to change brake discs/pads...so I thought I'd have a go at making one. That was the first video I actually spoke to the viewer on...very cringey watching it back. A few more like that followed before in January this year I finally grew a pair and decided to appear on and speak directly to the camera when I made my left-foot-braking film.

That seemed to go down quite well so more like that followed (H&T shifting, rev matching) and with the Focus RS being on order it was then a natural progression to regular vlogging of my long-term ownership and experiences with it. Quite surprisingly it seems I have an audience. Shameless social media promotion and posting has also helped a lot.

I saw someone else who had a failed engine made a video and it hit 100k views...when I made this I said to my wife I'd be happy with half that over time. It's almost done that in one week!

I can only suggest watching YT videos on how to promote yourself and so on...the main thing is you need to have something that's either relevant to people, today, or has enduring appeal so people will keep coming back to it. That was the main thinking behind the brake change video as there was nothing else out there but a very active online community of owners that would probably benefit from it.

Various functions and abilities on Youtube open up to you over time as your channel view count increases and so long as you don't keep running into copyright disputes...but keep at it with good quality watchable content and the subscribers, viewers, and pennies will surely come!
