Rite im new 2 the forum, am 19 from colchester,

need u lot 2 convince me a clio 1.8 rsi is the rite way 2 go

ok had an ax gt which was pretty fast but was falling apart so swapped it for a P reg corsa sport, bit slow and so so common but was a gd deal

looking to spent 1000-1500 really and get anythin from a K reg to a P probly

am i right in thinkin they are 0-60 - 8.6 secs insurance group 11

think i can get insured easy enough and have noticed theres a few on autotrader with fairly lowish miles (60K) for about £1400

what r ppls opinions on this car, fast? cheap 2 keep? reliable?

looking 2 get new car very soon, was meant 2 b getin a 106 1.4 xsi but it fell through

anyway theres a few on autotrader that r alrite with full mots, dont really mind about modded or unmodded really, just want sumin fast that i can keep 4 quite a while and slowly mod if needs b

cheers 4 any help

.Dave.

Remember that the close insurance grouping wont necessarily mean that theyre close in terms of insurance premiums. Insurance groups reflect other things like security and cost of repair parts when cars are new (1991-96 in this case). Because both cars are old(ish) and would probably be written off if they needed repairs much over a grand, the premiums on them will now shift to the performance side of things. Basically, the gap will be bigger than the IG suggests.

If you can get a 16V insured, then it makes a good case for itself over and RSi. If you look at the figures its obviously better, but theres also the fact that the 16V was developed as a bona fide hot hatch rather than a warmed-up RT. The suspension and mechanicals of the 16V are very different to the RSi (hence the flared arches and bonnet bulge/vent). Its not like the Mk2 Golf GTi 8V/16V - the Clio 16V is much closer to the Willy than it is to the RSi.

Still, if you cant go down that route, the RSi is still an excellent warm hatch and has some lovely bits - e.g. the Phase1 16V seats were carried over into the RSi in Phase2 and Phase3.

rust around the rear arches, and the rear wiper are the main problem areas! not really sure what else! and the bearings on the front are a problem, other than that im not to sure! have a try in both and see which you prefer, ive not driven either but i want to get a valver, they seem the more popular choice!

ok cheers 4 all info, surprised at all the replies ive got from posting at 10pm on a fri nite, gd forum with lots of helpful ppl so weldone every1 im impressed,

I went on elephant.co.uk and put in details for when i re-new in october,

so put in i was 20 with 2 yrs no claims, on a L reg 1.8 rsi

quoted £675 3rd party fire and theft, which is pretty damn gd, same quote really as i got for the 1.4 106 xsi, (insurance group 10)

You might want to check if the cam belt has been changed, I think this needs doing at 72k and can be quite expensive. You may be better getting a car with >72k if the cam belt has already been done.

essexlad, ive been looking a the same thing, really bored of 1.4RT performance on dual and motorway, so been looking at a Vavler, only thing that holds me back is the insurance and finding a mint one!

at the end of the day if ur going for performance, then the vavler, because to be honest for a 10 year old car, with a 1.8 engine the whole set up is pretty dam good, and u can wipe the smile off many other cars of same size engine.

the RSI on the other hand is basically like some1 said is the RT with a bigger engine. its still got farily respect performance.

for me im gonno wait till i can afford the Vavler, because i know if i go for the RSI chances are i will get bored 6 months down the line and look at the vavler agian.

But........ yes you will be sursprised how cheap the insurance on a RSI is!! nearly as cheap as my RT only £100 odd innit, an a RT is IG 5

guna stick 2 a rsi 4 now, my funds will not allow me to go to 16v for quite a while

can pick up a lowish mileage rsi for under 1600, all 16vs i saw were high mileage for my price band

i looked about before for other 1.4 cars that would do 0-60 in under 10 secs cos i neva expected 2 b insured on anythin higher than a 1.4

an rsi will b a fair bit quicker than a citroen ax gt yea???

split wit the g/f of a year yesterday so need sumin worth while 2 sink my money and time in2

.Dave.

The 106 1.4 xsi has 100 BHP standard which is under 10s

RSI are fairly quick but few mods and an RT will keep up with one (Just ask Nicky lol)

Valvers are quick as and will piss over any little hatch but its down to how much u got for a car and insurance

soz 4 same kinda username :)

ill go have a look at an rsi fairly near 2 me and test drive and c how fast it feels, just looking for sumin a lil bit faster than me ax gt was really, will end up getin full exhaust system on whateva i get anyway so will hopefully improve performance a lil

prob guna look at this 1 as its quite near 50 miles away

1995 clio 1.8 rsi 79k miles, full mot, 15" light alloys, pas, c/l , alarm, metallic green, 3 months parts and labour warranty , full valet

£1600

if i test drive 1 then will b able 2 tell if itll b enough 4 me or not :)

cheers.

.Dave, any1 round ere from colchester?

Rsi, with decat, filter and chip is a quick car, mate ran a 16.1 1/4 mile with these mods, that time will beat quite a few valvers.

looks dam smart mate, if i had come across it when buying my RT i would have def gone for that!

the 3 months parts warri comes in well handy and they do all needed bits and peices, like place did where i got mine, cant be bad!

only thing todo is check when Cambelt was changed and your sorted.

Hey Essexlad_Dave! welcome to the site

I am also from colchester woohooo! some colchester members!! LOL!

You arent the one that lives/works at the bottom of brook street are you? Used to be a nice black clio there and now a black AX GT?

What area you live in fella?

Do you have a big cliosport sticker on your back window?

Vix :)

No ive got a small one @ the top of the back window.. i have driven past you a couple of times, mines a black 172 with the k-tec grille.

yeah i know there is two black clios that go around and also Mikesclio as well also black so hard to keep up lol!

Yeah i think i know the one what rims you got on it? you probably have when my cars on the road i am always out and about lol!

Vix :)

Dave I wouldnt pay much notice when a car trader offers a 3 months warranty. These warranties are usually not worth sh1t as I have had troubles with a car trader before and personally just do not trust them as most are complete liars and very dishonest. If I was you I would get the car checked out by somebody who knows what they are looking for, and do a full HPI history check. As once a trader has your money you find it very difficult to get back or to get repairs carried out, as they will not cover wear and tear items, which on a car of that age means probably just about everything! Sure it is probably a great car, just do not trust traders ....
