you just let them air dry? they should be dry in about 24 hours to polish. i recommend Farecla G3, i know a few of the detailers on here use ScratchX. completely upto you which you pick
normally wet sand them smooth to provide a perfectly orange peel free surface. then polish and wax. compounding is basically a harsh polish that eliminates the need to wetsand if used correctly.
1500 is too aggressive unless you have a pc and alot of patience. you would be better with 2500/3000 unigrit if you are going to polish them by hand afterwards.
again g3 is good, but for hand use G6 is a better option as its a rapid compound and you could then follow up with scratchX or poorboys professional.
