I expect you'll all get bored of this long before I do, but I intend to keep this going for as long as I own my 200 (likely to be at least 5 years).

I'll update it periodically, and it will hopefully be a useful guide for anyone pondering 'can I afford one?'.

Car : Clio Renaultsport 200
Registered : June 2009
Factory options : parking sensors
Colour : Deep Black

So, onto my first full analysis of exactly what my 200 has cost so far;

Bloody hell thats impressive. Id get far to bored to do that lol. Like you say though its a good read for someone who's contemplating buying one

I've attempted to do similar with mine. Minus insurance/MPG and it's not anywhere as detailed as yours.

You seem to have done quite well on depreciation so far. Is that prices leveling out or did you get a bargain?

Bargain I think. £10k, 18k miles, 2.5 years old. Most were £11-12k at the time I bought.

I worked out something like this for the 2.5 years I owned the 197.

Including fuel, insurance, tires, servicing, interest on finance and depreciation (so everything) total cost of ownership was approximately £15,000

Oooh graphs and everything! Very impressive.

It's hardly lost any money too, you got it for a very good price - especially considering people are paying £20k for them new!!

First owners of my car suffered depreciation at a rate of 49 pence per mile compared to 10 pence per mile for me, yet it was still almost as good as a brand new car and came with 6 months remaining manufacturers warranty.

I did buy my 172 Cup brand new though.

Now, having spent hours basically spreadsheeting the f*** out of this data (there is so much more I could have posted) there is absolutely no way on earth I would ever buy brand new again.

It is quite literally a mad thing to do.

I love how nerdy this is.

Really interesting though! I daren't do it with mine. I'll just burn £50 notes instead.

Its a myth, my 2 197's have averaged over 28mpg, my current cup is sat at over 30 at the mo.

Only town cars average low mpg, and lets be fair its not was the car was made for.

i wanna know how you got those mpg when others are claiming 23??

Of the 300 or so miles I do each week, 250 of them are spent on minor A and B country roads, no traffic, no junctions, no traffic lights, so I just plod along at 50-60 mph barely ever having to touch the brakes.

So no motorways, and no urban crawl.

Doing my first long ish run tomorrow, up to Brands and back. Expecting it to harm my mpg by around 5 from the motorway running.

They're heavy, and they punch a big hole in the air so accelerating and high speed cruising is where most people suffer.

Totally agree with this, my 197 averaged 28 and I only used it for a 7 mile drive to work and back in lots of traffic jams.

The low MPG claims were started when the 197 came out by a bunch of anxious 172/182 owners who were out to give it a bit of a bashing, and the myth has stuck until this day. Not helped by the 197 / 200 owners who post up about how low the MPG will go if you floor it everywhere (same as any other car).

As you say, the MPG suffers hugely on motorways, mine was at 25mpg on the way up to Manchester at speeds of 70-80.

Yeah the gearing really isnt suited for motorway/dual carriageway use. 3,500rpm sat at around 75mph is a ballache. The 250 cup by comparison will happily do that sat at 2500rpm :(

Love it.

Have something similar for my Focus.

I may have to steal your graphs though.

Oh, and my fuel is estimated not actual due to filling up twice a week.

Quick update here, pretty much at six months of ownership and 9,000 miles now. Expensive time recently, mostly down to the brakes being given a thorough service. More to come with some aircon attention soon as well.

Llandow should hit everything a bit too, aiming for 10mpg
