Running Bodies on a near std engine

  Focus RS Mk1
Hi all.

172, ph2 52reg

Im now getting a little closer to the time when i can start up a new project for the car. I was thinking bodies but wanted some opinions/views on running them with a std engine (other than cat back exhaust).

do people have this setup, what is it like? how does it run? whats day to day like? fuel consumption? insurance? cold start? reliability etc etc.

i will go for the GDI kit as ive seen a few and talked it through briefly with Andy a little while back.

Just after some general info, ive done loads of searches and got some info but there are a million ITB threads and not many of them contribute to a near std engine.

i was thinking of cams and std inlet setup but i dont think this will have the impact im after. Turbo/supercharger, although would be great, is out of the budget.

Only other option is to get a completly different car altogether (eg westfeild/caterham) and sell the clio for a cheap daily runner. but thats too much space and money.

i could be wrong but im sure dan r on a standard engine. i could be wrong though

id be running 100% std apart from a cat back exhaust system, so std cams, std cylinder head, std pistons.

would this give a more noticeable drive over just cams. i just dont think cams will give me the power i really want. the engine is really lacking for me at the moment. although its healthy and makes normal power at the moment (179@ last RR) i feel that having bodies is what i need.

what i would really like is to drive a car similar to mine with the desired setup, andy, do you have a car knocking around like that at the moment?

gutted!!! sorry i couldnt make it today, am on late shift this week!

next time you have one available for 5mins then drop me a call and i'll pop over.

P.s. still got handbrake cables to return to you guys too!

What are the 172's like on fuel with cams and with cams and bodies n whats the performance like, 0-60 (roughly) i no its not important for road drivin but gives an idea of the gains of the mods.

watching that just makes me want to buy a better car tbh rather than blowing £2k upwards on throttle bodies!

Just a quick thanks to Andy and Danny @ GDI for sorting me out with a blast in a bodied clio. Thanks for John for lettin me take her out for a spin!

Impressed with it indeed. not as loud as i thought it would be, i have heard bodied saxo/106's before so was expecting it to be louder but im glad it wasnt to be honest. its a good thing. Much more useable power than i expected. Crap weather today mind but i was pleased!

Think i'll be taking the plunge hopefully within the next couple of months (damn wedding costs!!!)

Any performace figures (roughly) dan?

Tbh mate, 0-60 and 0-100 are irrelevant. 30-70 and 40-120 are far more relevant but I honestly have no idea! Ill get some videos up together. With bodies it completely changes the car in everyway ( low end, top end and midrange. Theres no waiting for that 5k kick which always takes way too long to arrive. Theres just more grunt everwhere and even more at the top when u get cams done like i did.
I would of said 0-100 is comfortably 3+ seconds quicker. I had a play with a brand new shape S3 two weekends ago and we both accelerated from 60mph all the way to 130 and there was honest to god, no difference! After that im convinced the audi would easily pull away but up till then it was so equal and he was clearly trying!! The little puffs of smoke out of the audi's exhaust kinda gave it away :) i was impressed with my little clio lol.

i was impressed today, it was very very wet so i was a bit careful and the roads didnt allow too much speed but what i did do i was happy with.

compared to the price of a turbo conversion its the best bang for buck your gonna get!

Yeah they are far more fun to drive than a standard one. Bit crap with these greasy roads as i dont get traction in second which can become tedious!! More reliable than a turbo conversion too i would of said!

John who i spoke to today said his has had a problem with crank sensor and a split fuel line throughout the 5 yrs of having bodies. which i thought was damn impressive.

the way my other car drives on throttle bodies compared to the modified inlet i had on it was great, its a 1600 vauxhall, drives really well very big torque spread, was loud tho with the inlet facing you

We were going to run our car ITB'd track car on the standard ECU. Paul (Rstuning was going to do it for us)

Only problem was that we were not able to get the car to leeds by a trailor ect so we just wired it up to the OMEX, which paul mapped and its been spot on.

to be fair......the other cars in the vid were upwards of 40k

kinda puts it in to a little perspective lol...the skylines were just insane down the straights...but they werent getting all that far away from me thru the twisties.. a bit more time in the car, and on the track would have seen me pushing em round the corners i think.

Do you know what its like to live with a Skyline? They might be quick but their total money pits.

At least with the Clio you can return back to some sense of normality and economy!

Folk have been tuning shopping cars for years. Its expensive but rewarding once your running a decent set up. Far more rewarding than hand picking a already quick car down the local dealers

  Focus RS Mk1
thats my exact dilema! Ive been eying up impreza p1's for a while now.

yeah there a nice car but id have to spend near 10k on a good one. running costs/insurance/tax is all going to mount up.

A tuned clio will be just as much fun and still relatively cheap. its just gettin it up to the spec that you want. hence this thread title.

3k over spending 5-6 k + selling my clio for a P1 doesnt add up to me!

not to mention gettin woken up at silly o clock by some halfwit chav trying to cut your double glazing out so he can rifle through your house til he finds the keys for it.

Sean id be very interested to see how you get on with these - my mates running throttle bodies on a 1.3 106 rallye and it goes very well now! Ive been thinking these would be nice on the 182 maybe sometime!
