Running costs on Cliosport

Looking to either get a Trophy or a 172 Cup with 30-40k mileage
I know about the cambelt needing replaced after 5yr or 70k

Could anybody tell me what else I may need to check for?
I want one in a good condition that I don't need to do much to (brake pads for example, or whatever)

And how much on average would you spend a year on servicing, spare parts etc? Not including fuel, tax, insurance.

I'm just trying to work out a budget. Due to me being 20 and have recently had a crash, insurance on a 172 Cup would be around £1500 per year and I'm going to phone up to get a quote on a Trophy, which should be a bit more? Due to the steep insurance I can't afford to be spending lots on maintenance.

Thanks in advance

If you cannot afford to run the car don't bother getting insured on it at high costs.

4 years and 60k is about the longest you shoud leave most cars.

Servicing depends which seive your on about and if your DIY overservicing etc ]

I was asking to see if I could afford to run the car or not.

Meaning..? I shouldn't buy one over 4 years or 60k mileage?

I was basically asking how much owners on this forum budget or spend per year on servicing/spare parts.

Length of time to leave it until cambelt needs replacing.

Depends on what goes wrong :p

I considered a 172 at 19, decided against in the end.

You dont want to be running any car on a tiny budget, scared that something will go wrong.

Tyres/oil etc etc you can easily budget for, thats no problem. But hit a big bill at an MOT and you're screwed.

Wait until your insurance has come down a bit mate.

Well what would you consider a big MOT bill?

My current car I've had from new and hasn't been MOT'd yet so I'm clueless on this factor.

Wait till your 21 with 1yrs ncb, green light insure me for £950 fully comp.

Running costs are down to luck really.

My last service cost me £140 using genuine parts at a VAT registered garage to keep my AA warranty intact. That was for spark plugs, air filter, pollen filter, oil & filter change. Could probably do it myself for half that.

Cambelt service which is due next year is bloody expensive typically need to budget £500 for that from what ive read.

Tyres again depends wat you go for you can get budgets for around the £40 mark or go for top spec michelin PE2's which will cost you around £100 a corner. No point having a car like the 172/182 with cheap tyres though...just asking for death lol.

Break disks and pads are unusual. The rears are alot more expensive than the fronts.

Cost me £200 for rear disks and pads, £100 for front disks and pads which i chose to upgrade and fitted Brembo max disks and Ferodo pads.

That’s alls i can think of for now.

In response to MOT bill -

Rear shocks are prone to failing on 1*2's, think these are around £45 + labour each. So say £140

Then you might need a couple of tyres which as i posted above could be another £200.

Then you might need a new lambda sensor if you fail emisions which will cost you another £100 or so quid.

Soon mounts up, generally though id say other than tyres & insurance a 1*2 doesnt cost a whole lot more than any other car to run, however if your stretching youself on insurance in the first place then you may strugle to pay any unexpected bills.

I'm budgeting in advance for unexpected costs
If the worst comes to the worst I should have a fair bit of money to cover it
At the best I have some savings at the end of the year to play around with or put towards something else on the car

Same. i worked out all the running costs, found i could afford one on my basic wage without the overtime i was already doing. Id of had no money after alocating myself 4 tanks of fuel per month with. This was based on 500 coins a month. If i needed new tyres, Mot, servicing etc id of been stuffed. So decided to go for yet another clio, moved from a 51 plated poverty spec 1.2 16v expression to a 2005 1.2 16v dynamique with all the features excluding an electric sunroof. Because of this ive got plenty of money left to enjoy myself and go round town like the typical 19 year old student i am.

So if id of had a clio sport then great, id have the fastest car anyone i know my age has, but i wouldnt be going round town or have a social life.

Was adament a month or 2 ago on getting a 182 this time round, saving for a year or so till im 21, but for the same reason yet again, ive kicked it in the teeth, and instead im aiming for a 2005/55 low mileage 1.6 16v Dynamique, either in pearl black like i have now, or back to my old colour blue as i love them both.

Persdonally, if you find you dont have spare cash at the end of the month, i wouldnt bother doing it. People told me time and time again that a car wasnt worth skinting myself over, and they were right.

I suppose it's what you want to spend your money on eh?
I don't go out much - I'll have a drink once in a while but I'm not that into it.
Of course I like socialising but I prefer keeping fit and driving.

you will be able to afford to run it, if you want it enough, im near £250 a month on payments £170 ish on insurance, about £40 fuel costs a week and im a labourer, also have the usual bills, sky, rent, electric etc;)

go on you know you want to:)

yep it is. Im not happy top spend all my earnings on a car. I would dearly love a 182 though.

172's are pretty cheap to run imo...I barely noticed a difference between a 172 and my 1.2!

Not really, grade A postcode but its still a 2.0ltr at 19! :(

i was 19 when i got mine, was only 300 more than a 1.2 to insure. In a relative scale thats 25£ a month, so less than 1/2 of a nite out!

Suppose depends where your priority's lie.

well ive moved from a saxo vtr to a 172 and the fuel costs are particulaly different. im still getting 60-65 miles from a tenner. servicing costs arent any higher too. as long as you budget well you'll have no problem if something unexpected happens. happy car hunting :)
