Be patient and run it in as per the handbook mate...
No more than 3500rpm (or 85mph) for the first 1000km (625 miles) is what it says and I did run mine in.
All this about ragging it from new makes them faster than if you run them in is a load of b0ll0x, you either get a good or bad one from the factory.
As proof, my run in properly Cup ran the 1/4 in 14.5secs @ 94mph on Sunday with only 2700 miles on (so still tight) and the only mod is a Viper, so its rapid and I did take it easy and let it bed in gently!

Rag it. Modern tolerances should allow it. My limit on a new car is 250miles, and Ive also been toseveral dealers of various makes where theyve taken the same attitude.
Theyre just covering their backs in the handbook advice.
wait till you let it touch 4k rpm and it will shock you even more...........When you have the pleasure of letting it hit 5k rpm you better take a spare pair of pants with you and make sure you grip that steering wheel nice and tight as the car leaps all over the road, fighting for traction, as it takes you all the way to 7k rpm in a flash in 1st 2nd and 3rd !

My Missus bought a brand new motor in march and we asked bout running it in as it was not mentioned to us on the morning of collection, and the sales woman said that now adays cars dont need running in, oil quality, build tolerances etc etc!
But its your car mate, im sure ragging it in little bursts wont hurt, while you pootling around running the beast in!
How jealous i am, Wish i had this dilema myself!!

Trust me lads... if you heard what my mates mk1 172 sounds like after 2 years then youd run it in!
He cained it from day one and it sounds like a diesel in a morning and the gearbox is f*cked.
It aint just the engine that needs to run in, you need allow all the other moving parts to break in too.

Cant comment on 172s as havent had one/got mine yet. However, my Dad has an MGZR 130. When he took it in for its 6000mile safety check the mechanic said "Thank god someone is using the rev range on this car. Most of these come in for their first service all clogged up because the engine hasnt been opened up at all, and the old grannies that drive them tootle round town all day at 20-30mph". However, he did add, that the first 500miles should be taken easy, and after that limit, power should be tested in bursts.
As for thrashing cars, if you run it in for 1000miles, and then thrash it silly for the next 12000, you can expect rattles and things going wrong. A friend of the family who works for Ford Rally Group told me that that is why rally cars workings dont last very long... they are taken to the limit continuously. The performance road cars might have flash stats, but they are not designed to exceed more than around 85mph for continuous and regular driving.
When I get my Cup, I shall certainly be running it in for the first 5-6hundred miles... ok I might drive to Edinburgh and back the first weekend, but hey... Im going to do it.
i took the first 250 miles in my 1.2 16v pretty easily, pootled along most, opened her up some, and hit the limiter once by accident.
then saw ben r to get my car lowered by him and he said its bollox, half the wearing in time the handbook said and ur still over the milage needed to run a new engine in. they only say that to cover their own back, However i suggest the first 250 miles is taking easy. ive done 1050 miles and had it less than 2 weeks and am still in the pootling along stage & opening her up from time to time when shes warmed up, I havent had any problems yet! its going on a 400mile journey this weekend tho which should see the end of the wearing in time!
But ive noticed somet so far... the sound of the engine subtley changes on idle revs when i have the clutch in & out... this is usually connected to the gearbox aint it ? whats wrong if any thing?!

My mum had an AX 1.0 from new in 96, then I had it and now my sis has it. I did most of the mileage even when my mu had it.
I ragged the tits of the poor little thing as well. 400miles on the clock, 6 people in the car, and screaming away in 1st to get up the Edge in Alderley Edge. It sounds sweet as a nut and has had no major troubles at all, 40kmiles later.
